MPEG 2 and compression

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hello to all. I just found your site, and I think it is great. I have a few questions for you all, if you don't mind.

Do they have just a software package available that can take my movies I made, and turn it into MPEG2. Don't get me wrong, I like making Video CD's, but I want to also save my movies out as DVD quality and then save them for when DVD writables become affordable. So what software programs would be good.

And my 2nd question, and last. What type of Quicktime compression do they give to Movie trailers. They play and look so clean. I would love to get that same result, and then be able to play it back on my Mac or PC.

Thank you very much for taking time to help me. j

Search the web for

bbMPEG and TMPGenc ( english patch availible )

Mpeg2 will more than likley take more time to encode, just as fair warning. Dont bother encoding mpeg2 at the same bitrate and size as VCD, as it does not give you any more quality.

As for quicktime they use the sorensen codec(s). You might as well forget about using it, most programs that can emcode it are several thousand dollars. Apple has the rights to the codec(s) well wrapped up.

Happy encoding.
