The Magpie idol is set to return to St James's Park in the summer as part of Bobby Robson's coaching staff.

I understand Beardsley will be invited to work with the club's youth teams, which already contain some potentially exciting talent. Recently, Beardsley has been carrying out a similar role for Kevin Keegan within the England set-up. The Longbenton-born star enjoyed two successful stints with United as a player - helping them win promotion back to the top flight in 1984 before later moving on to Liverpool. And he returned home in 1993 when Newcastle made it back to the Premiership and became known as 'The Entertainers' because of the cavalier brand of football they played. When Robson was appointed manager back in September he was asked by chairman Freddy Shepherd to undertake a review of how the playing and coaching side of the club was run. Robson will put forward his blueprint for the future once the season comes to an end with the visit of Arsenal on Sunday. The Gunners secured the runners-up spot in the Premiership last night, and with the trip to St James's coming just three days before their UEFA Cup Final against Galatasaray, Arsene Wenger may decide to rest his key players. One person who definitely won't figure for United is goalkeeper Steve Harper, who is now recovering following surgery on a torn knee cartilage. Robson has issued a challenge to Duncan Ferguson to get fit for the game - but it remains to be seen if the big Scot figures. n Steve Howey played the full 90 minutes for United's Reserves last night as their season ended in disappointing fashion with a 4-1 defeat at Leeds. Des Hamilton grabbed Newcastle's goal, with former Magpie Darren Huckerby netting twice for Leeds.
