medical question from "Loose Ends"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

Since the medical commentary for "Loose Ends" isn't up yet and I know that there are a few docs on this board, I thought I'd see if anyone here knows the answer to this one.

Cleo said that Shelley was bleeding from "complete transection of the hymen." What is transection? (I get the feeling knowing the answer will make her father even more of a scumbag -- if that's possible)

They realized then that she'd been penetrated, raped, and not "merely" fondled (although that in itself would have been bad enough). Transection: trans = through, section = cut or division. The membrane was broken.
