Smart quotes look like this while stupid quotes look like this ". If you compose on this site; no problem. If you do it in something like Word Perfect, change your quotes in hot links. At least that is my experience.Best wishes,,,,

They are called escape sequences. It allows you force a system to view characters the way you want, rather than executing a function.<"blah"> (for instance)
gives <"blah">
