In an interview I read on the weekend, Hansen said that he was all signed up to Toon instead of Liverpool as a young player but that Toon pulled out at very last minute for technical reasons???

similarly, in 1975 Joe Joe Joe Harvey had agreed terms for Andy Gray as a 19 year old but it fell thru when the new manager (spit) came in

Joe Harvey was due to sign Ian St John until Shankley persuaded him that he should sign for Liverpool.

I recall the Toon being reported to be interested in signing the then virtually unknown Alan Hansen.

I would suspect the "technical reason" cited would be an unwillingness to stump up the cash - it usually was.
