BBSPCLFA Cup Round 1

30 September 1996, Aston Villa at SJP, 4-3. One of the games of the 90's. No Toon fan raised an eyebrow when Man Utd paid 14m for Dwight Yorke; we remember this match. A game which would be considered too open by twats like Lawrenson since they ignore the quality of the finishing. Yorke gave Brian Little the early grins before 2 from Big Les and 1 from Alan sent us in 3-1 up at half time. Yorke, however, was deadly, beating Srnicek with a header and an exquisite lob to get his hattrick, but Howey had already scored a rare goal to give us the points. Another aspect that categorised the way we tried to play is that this competetive game produced no bookings. A classic encounter to get the BBSPCLFA Cup up and running.
Points
Srnicek 3 (2 + 1 gd)
Watson 2
Beresford 2
Howey 7 (def goal)
Peacock 2
Gillespie 2
Lee 2
Batty 2
Ginola 2
Asprilla 1 (sub)
Ferdinand 6 (2 goals!)
Shearer 4 (goal)

BBSPCLFA Cup Results: Round 1

Home Team Result Away Team
Pilgrim's Converts 2-0 Baxter Basics
Wallsend Old Boys 3-2 Yelli's Yobs
Toon Tragedy 0-2 Duncan's Disorderlies
Proper Lard Unathletic 1-3 Woodstock County
Steph's Superstars 0-1 Howdon Harriers
Blaydon Racers 2-1 MacBeth's Marauders

The Stellar Warriors 0-1 Jessie's High Pants
Athletico Backworth 0-1 Pete's Porkie Pies

MinesaS&N Academicals 4-4 The Gallowgate
Ceptic 0-3 Quantum Mechanicals
The ITK Heaton World Beaters 0-4 Beardo United
Dudley Boys 0-2 Chevy's Choppers
Barton's Samba 2-1 How Toon is Now?

Some extraordinary results here. 7 Premiership teams have been knocked out, with the biggest talking points being the draw between Min Acad and G'Gate and Beardo United's emphatic revenge on ITKHWB for last season's final result.

The TFKASS have shown that League form means nothing in the cup as they beat Spayne in a 9 goal thriller, whilst Howdon Harriers are pleasantly surprised to beat the League leaders on their own patch. Woodstock County were ecstatic to upset the form table and put PLU out in the first round.

The Draw for round 2 took place immediately after the results were in:

BBSPCLFA Cup Draw: Round 2

Home Team Result Away Team
Woodstock County Vs Borussia Canwehaveourballbach
Blaydon Racers Vs Barton's Samba
Jessie's High Pants Vs Wallsend Old Boys
TFKASS Vs Chevy's Choppers
Pete's Porkie Pies Vs Min Acad or G'Gate
Howdon Harriers Vs Pilgrim's Converts
Beardo United Vs Quantum Mechanicals
Brewery Droopers United Vs Duncan's Disorderlies

So, Woodstock County v Borussia Canwehaveourballbach is our only all-Premiership tie in Round 2 whilst Pete's Porkie Pies will have to wait a couple of days for the replay between Min Acad and G'Gate to see who is visiting the Pie Dome.

Softie,

When can I join in?

How far away is the end of the season - and don't say it's next bleedin' Saturday, unless of course it is.

Also - fancy meeting up for a quiet one or two soon?

Gibbo, there are 15 league games and at least 5 Cup encounters to go, so something like 3 weeks until this season packs up. We'll see if there's enough demand for another season cos it's quite high- maintenance. You coming along to the Strawberry on Sunday? End of season and all that...

Well that leaves the two South Coast teams free to concentrate on the league! (:o)

Forgive me, since I've not exactly been keeping up to speed with the league - but how are points attributed. ie how do the individual player points relate to the team score?

-- Anonymous, May 08, 2000

Hi Dan. I calculate the average score (either for all the Cup games or each Division seperately, depending on the compy) and make the average 1 goal. If you score more points than your opponent you will win, with the average as my guide to what the score ought to be. There is a thread entitled 'Corinthain League Query' or something, which has a more detailed explanation, but 'yes', it is a bit subjective and I do want to make it more self-regulating.

Strawberry? Oh all right then!

Told you that Ceptic would lose if I followed them....to further prove this Kiss Of Death I would like to now give my wholehearted support to.........Quantum Mechanicals....

I can be bought of with drinks!!

Conspiracy
How come the Gallowgate score more goals then they've score all season and still don't win??? I demand a recount (and a re- pick!
Am I the only one who didn't pick Shearer?

No Kegsy..... you are not alone! :((

About a third of the participants didn't choose Shearer (me included), the big difference has been keepers and midfield. The Srnicek/Hislop and Beardsley/Batty brigade have hardly had a sniff all season because of this poxy random number thingy churning out the high scores.

All of us without Shearer chose Big Les, so we should have all done better in this game with his 6 points to Alan's 4, however, if you had the wrong midfield you were sunk. I only beat Steph by Tino coming off the bench for me, we were identical until then.

Harsh game...

Next season why not make up your own random table 1=56, 2=211 etc and invite the participants to give you two numbers each? Then we can only blame ourselves if the randomness doesn't work out.

Pilgrim, since the excuse 'I couldn't find the time' will not ring very true, I have to say this is an excellent suggestion. I shall sort it out tonight.

Only too glad to help! ((o;

Softie,

I probably got my sums wrong with two matches each (30 matches 16 teams) - unless you, as organiser, dont submit any and totally blame the rest of us.

Another thought is that if you're running two leagues with the same matches then only 1 number each required.
