Christian Bassedas's dream move to Newcastle is back on.

Mick Wadsworth, the St James' Park head coach, is flying to South America to tie up the details for the #3millionrated midfielder, after having to postpone a recent trip because of a players' strike in Argentina.

Newcastle manager Bobby Robson has long admired the Argentine international, but earlier plans to bring him to the Premiership hit a financial hitch.

Bassedas's club, Velez Sarsfeld, claimed in February that Newcastle did not have the cash.

Bassedas, 26, said then: 'I was desperate for the transfer to happen because it was a dream for me.'

Thoughts anyone?

If Wadsworth has indeed gone over to watch Badedas again it seems probable that his transfer is on. It seems that BR was keen on the bloke when he was skint: now that he's got a wad it seems logical he should go back for him - form and fitness permitting of course. The S/Sun reckons the Paul Bosvelt deal is dead. Apparently Feyenoord are brassed off with the Toon for not following up their earlier interest and verbal commitments, and have now offered the 30 yr. old player a contract extension and the captaincy for next season.

Doesn't Jose Luis Chilavert the crazy paraguayan keeper play for Veez Sarsfield? Perhaps Newcastle will be having a closer look at him when they play Talleras in next weeks game as we could use another keeper.Perez will be leaving as will Karelse who is set to leave on a free transfer, having been told to find a new club, there have been no bids for him since he let in was it 11 goals in 3 starts? Ruud paid 3/4 million and he is now worth nowt. The other bit of transfer talk is that AC Milan watched Nobby play against Boro last week. I think that either he or Goma may already have been sold , which would pay for Bassedas and / Or Chillavert.

On the basis that we should be buying for the future, I'd go for a 26 year-old. Clarky's logic about coming back for him when the cash is available is sound to me. However, my one concern would be the "Nobby syndrome". Buying European internationals is a big enough risk. Buying from as far away as South America means they will be unavailable for quite a number of games per season. However, with a big enough squad, that shouldn't be too much of a problem. I guess it works OK in Spain and Italy.

Bosvelt may be OK, but unless he's cheap, then buying a 30 year-old is not very forward thinking. OK - so he may have 3-4 four years left, but I'm not sure.

However, as always, I'll trust YBR's judgement - just as he trusts me not to interfere.

WEll as far as defenders go, one for the future could well be Rusty Pierce, currently playing for the NE Revolution. 20yrs old, a rookie who's already become one of the first names on the team sheet. Not sure what his 'regular' position is supposed to be in the back line. we've got so many defenders injured that any defender who can walk plays. He seems to read the game well, is unafraid of taking on the "big names", good crosser, gets forward if he's got the ball and no one else is available, not afraid to take a shot at goal, and tough as nails. He went down in a collision of heads last week with a nasty laceration that required stitches before they could even take him off the field. (Those who got a close look at him said it looked like a bullet wound). No concussion, but we were all surprised last night to see him in teh starting line up. The stitches didn't slow him down or cause him to shy away from headers. Of course the defender shortage probably had a say in him being put out there. Still, I don't think we'd have done as well without him last night(we won FINALLY, and in regulation time, to become sole first place holders in the division!). He was a virtual one-man show in the back at times. 3 more of him and we'd be dangerous. ;-)

Not sure how he'd compare to top premiership defenders, but could be worth a look.

Rusty Pierce? Should have it looked at by Derek Wright a.s.a.p.

That can give you lockjaw can't it?

Ciara,
How do we get info like that to BR - I would imagine he's a bit to busy looking for ways to spend his 15-20 mill to spend much time lurking on here ?

Maybe we all should bombard him with e-mail hints to have a look at the guy, he probably wouldn't be too pricey and it wouldn't be any more of a problem getting him in from the States than flying these trialists in from South America.

Well if Bobby(or one of his staff) would decide to fly to Boston for the Benfica game, the Revs play just before so he'd get to see for himself. ;-)

London is much less flying time from Boston than South America too! And the US national coach doesn't pull European-based players for non-European games unless absolutely necessary.
