Niagra mist good or bad ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

Each time I look at this picture, I wonder if the mist improves ot spoils the picture - I would welcome your comments.

Mist hardly ever spoils a picture for me. Contrasty light usually spoils the picture. Also you've got some strange artifact pixels along the top edge of the falls. Composition looks good except next time crop out the people.

Now you've blown it for me - I always though the people added perspective. Thanks for the comments.

Chris, I'm sure the suggestion to crop the people is due to the fact that the rules for posting a photo here, among other things, include "no hand of man". Even though the hands in you photo are very very small, you've violated one of the cardinal rules of this site. You've been luckier than many in the past who've been reamed rather royally for such violations. Read the rules for posting here before your next attempt. http://photo.net/photo/nature/imagerules.html

Here's an example that more than meets the technical standards! http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=001kOs

Good luck.

In this case the light makes the mist bad - nothing wrong with the mist in itself, but with this harsh light it does not improve the picture. I think it would have been better if the near rocks were free of the mist - this perhaps happens when the wind is in the right direction?

Considering the size and lack of importance of the "hand of man" area of the picture you would have to be an anal moron to let it interfere with Chris's attemt to make a better picture by posting it here. It is hard to suggest how to make a better shot of this without being there. I think mist can be great and you probably could have made better use of it. Chris, continue to look at photographers that you admire and try to get a feel for why. Continue shooting and don't let the silliness frustrate you.
