Raw sewage released into Lake Washington May 4, 2000, 05:15 PM KIRKLAND About 67,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into Lake Washington Thursday morning at Kirkland. A spokeswoman for the King County Department of Natural Resources says the sewage bypassed the pump system and poured into the lake for about two hours.

Officials haven't figured out yet what caused the system to malfunction. Workers have completed repairs and the pumps are working properly again.

The sewage from the Kirkland area was on its way to a treatment plant in Renton. The Department of Ecology and health officials have been notified of the spill.
