Resolution of images for use in PowerPoint presentation

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have purchased the Oly 2500 and mainly use my camera to obtain clinical photos for use in academic talks using PowerPoint. I typically use the HQ setting (1712X1368)to obtain my images. What is the recommended resolution to set my camera on if my photos are being used to project onto large screens? Secondly, if I subsequently would like to use a few of the images for a publication, the requirement is typically 5x7 prints in B&W - what resolution would I need to produce useable images for professional printing? I would like to store my images in a standard size since for all purposes. Thanks for your help.

Troy, We use everything from the Kodak 290's up to the $40K Canon/Kodak cameras for our digital outputs. We archive all of the images at 300ppi in 10 inches. Fortunately we have a 40 gig server which allows us to do this and the images are subsequently archived to a DVD "jukebox" which has 4 reader/writers and can store 1.2 terrabytes of information. Obviously this is a custom installation and far beyond most people's (and many company's means). You might consider a 250 meg zip or a Jaz for storage. If you are sending digital images to a publication they are going to want the largest file size you can send them (even though much of this is wasted file space because ,in my experience, these publishers often are not very knowledgeable at all about digital output). Powerpoints! HMMMMM. I usually give my customers 150 dpi and let them work from that. 96 should be more than adequate. I have found that anything larger than 150 dpi can wreck the powerpoint process. Hope this helps and if I can help with any other questions would love to help. (this seems to be a redundent part in my post)
