Why not Don Hutchison?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Why the apparent non interest in Hutchison

1. Can play in central midfield as cover /or instead of lee/speed 2. Can play upfront 3. Is not overexpensive 4. Loves the Toon?

What is the problem?

Not enough quality...

Yes he could "possibly" do the job that either of them do (although I doubt he'd get as many goals as Speed!) but I'm hoping we're looking to improve the squad and not just get like for like in...

To be fair...it would'nt kill me if we signed him, I'd say that there's a chance I could be wrong but still.....

He is as good as we have and a couple of years younger than Speed. If we spent BIG money on a couple of decent strikers then I think we would be better off compromising and getting Hutch in midfield rather than rely on the sun tan kid from Cramlington or the trinket seller from the coca cabana.

Good idea. He drinks in the Strawbeery as well.

Actually, depending on how much YBR has and who else he spends it on, not a bad idea. Especially if we get rid of Kets and the dross.

KEEGAN COVETS SCOT HUTCHISON

By John Cross, Mirror Sport

Kevin Keegan picked Don Hutchison as his Brit of all right - and the man he would most like to call up for England's Euro 2000 squad.

The England coach was asked to pick a player he would most want from each of the national sides in the British Isles - and it was Everton midfielder Hutchison who topped his list.

It was Scottish international Hutchison, 29 next week, who earned Keegan's most glowing reviews ahead of even Manchester United star Giggs and Keane, who has won both Player of the Year awards after leading his team to the Premiership title.

And the irony is that Gateshead-born Hutchison could be playing under Keegan but chose Scotland by virtue of his Scottish father because he did not think he had a chance with England.

Keegan claims Hutchison really caught his eye when he starred for Scotland in their Euro 2000 play-off with England five months ago.

Speaking on Talk Radio, Keegan said: "If you'd asked me two or three years ago, I would have picked Colin Hendry. He is a tremendous player who seems to pull people along with him because of his fantastic leadership qualities.

"Now I would say Don Hutchison. He's the one player - certainly when we played Scotland at Wembley - who we found very difficult to cope with.

"It's very difficult to pick him up. He gets in that dangerous position where he doesn't really play up front, ...a bit like Peter Beardsley used to do in a different way.

"He's had a very good season for Everton. He can do the little things and he works at pace too.

"Don's had a few knocks. It didn't work out for him at Liverpool. He went down a division to Sheffield United, but fought his way back into the Premiership. For some players, when they get on a downward curve there's no way back. He's obviously got great character."

Keegan's surprise choice was no shock to Scotland boss Craig Brown, who said: "We're delighted to have Don and from his recent performances it's little wonder that England regret letting him go. Their loss is definitely our gain."

Over to you Mr. Robson...

I agree, he'd be on my list already. Not gonna cost much either.

No chance. My mate Craig went to school with him, and reckons he's a proper twat and no mistake. Besides which, he's overated, dirty player, and chose Jockland instead of the country of his birth. Stay clear of him.
