Olympus Camedia Software

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to using the camedia software to download pictures from an Oly 2500. I would rather use photoshop 5.5, but i think i saw something in the oly docs that said something about using camedia software and iterpolation of pixels.

Thx,

Jeff

My opinionis to use the TWAIN driver to download to PhotoShop. I mistakenly installed Camedia and it overwrote some DLLs in my computer and caused a nightmare. Thank heaven some benevolent tech at Symantec (Norton System Works 2000) was able to help me. The idiot at Olympus wasn't! He couldn't even speak English! Where do they get these people?! Anyway just install their TWAIN driver. I also downloaded the updated driver from their web site as the one shipped with my D600L did not work. Larry

I agree with Larry - install the TWAIN driver instead of the Camedia software package. Check Olympus' site for recent updates, too. There's no sense in wasting valuable drive space with their software when/if you have Photoshop or another imaging program.

Interpolation isn't so much of an issue at this stage of the game. If you're going to publish or use them in some sort of presentation, then you need to watch the compression settings in your camera.

I've been shooting with the C200-z and I often shoot .tif with zero compression for the largest, cleanest file (1600 x 1200 @ 5.6MB). If you're sharing them with friends and family, then I'd use a higher compression setting and a lower resolution.

The Camedia software really doesn't seem to add much utility to the downloading process. I have been using the PIE program and various photo editing software programs. I got to that point because Camedia would not recognize my Lexar SmartMedia reader and PIE did. I haven't used Camedia since.

There are LOTS of problems with Camedia. Generally speaking, it wasn't ready for release (I'm talking v 2.0, here) and there is very poor support. It's really the only major downside to Olympus. To the extent you can work around Camedia, you're doing yourself a favor.
