Title: State System Crashes for Several Hours

Last Updated: April 27, 2000 at 1:46:34 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A computer problem may have prevented people from leaving messages for their legislator.

The state's voice-mail system failed for several hours Wednesday.

"It's funny how quickly you get sort of addicted to some of these technologies like voice mail," said George Lightbourn, secretary of the Department of Administration.

Lightbourn said the glitch occurred when technicians tried to combine voice and e-mail messaging onto the same system for a limited number of employees.

The test was stopped after the voice-mail system unexpectedly crashed, he said.

The system was working again by early evening.
