8 million for Solano?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Another Teramtwaddle story, but:

"Solano in Spanish move

Peruvian captain Nolberto Solano has played his last game for Newcastle as he is currently in Spain finalising a move to Real Madrid. The 25-year-old winger is tying up an #8 million move to the Spanish giants. Solano has made 73 senior appearances, scoring 10 goals since his #2.5 million signing from Boca Juniors. Bobby Robson accepts that he is losing one of the best crossers of a ball in the Premiership but he has been frustrated by Solano's frequent involvement with the Peruvian squad. But he is making a #5.5 million profit on the former Boca Juniors player and he has got a ready-made replacement in another South American, Diego Gavilan, a 20-year-old Paraguayan who impressed in only his second senior start in Saturday's 2-0 win over Coventry. Robson said of Gavilan: "His goal was a wonderful moment for him and we believe he's a decent player who will get better. Diego is very alert and he's a bright personality and I think he's got a great future."

Nobby is a great player, but 8 million was more than I was expecting. I had heard that we may only get 4-5 million for him. And at least he is not being sold to Man U.

Will we miss him? Bye Bye Nolberto, Hello Diego.

Bye Bye Nolberto, Hello Diego....

(then, 73 games later) ...Bye Bye Diego, Hello....

etc etc etc

Well at least it's better than Bye Bye Gazza, Hello Ian Bogie!

If it's true, I'd bite their hand off. Diegoooal will do the biz for us. No doubt Bobby will pick up a few more gems over the summer.

At #8mm he's gone - bye Nobs, thanks for everything!
That seems to be about the going market rate for a somewhat better than average midfielder, and indicates the problem we face in acquiring the real talent we need to become competitive. We will need to spend at least that amount to get a ready made replacement for Rob Lee.
To be honest, with the sort of funny money being asked for less than top class players I actually feel Don Hutchinson would be a good acquisition for the squad at ca. #3mm, and certainly a better investment than #7mm for Dacourt who didn't work out at Everton.
Hutchinson and Trevor Sinclair for Solano would be good business, imo. Things look like they're warming up.

It'll be a shame to see Nobby go (and being a sentimental sort I'd say that about almost anyone in the squad) but if it is true and it is #8m then it has to be a canny deal for us. There was a recent rumour that he is older than he claims which would make it an even better deal but I doubt if there was any truth to that.

It is interesting to note that TSM bought Nobby in the close season just before he RESIGNED. During the same period he bought Hamman as well so the two together amount to a profit of over #8m if memory serves. It looks as though TSM may have been starting to make some better decsions all too late in the day. I think we bought Guivarc'h at the same time, (rapidly sold for the same price) and Charvet was obtained for a modest #0.5m. It's just a shame that we had the millstone of characters like Andersson and other payroll passengers, plus the fact that the likes of Pistone and Speed were being played out of position (the three named amounts to #12.5m of our assets going to waste).

Hopefully the #8m will go some way towards paying off the terrible legacy left behind by TSM and Ruud so that YBR can continue our climb back to the top. I'd like to see us buying good young players, with scope to improve in quality and transfer value, and hungry for success. Similar to Cole and Dyer for example for us, and the several intelligent buys made by Wenger for Arsenal.

If it's true, thanks Nobby for a job well done.

Well, I'll wait untul it's official. I bet there's a small matter of a medical to sort out, and knowing wor luck..........

If the rumour is true, then at #8m, it's a good deal. YBR has contacts across the world and will hopefully make good use of the money.

IMHO, Nobby never quite showed us his best. Sure, he made a lot of assists, especially before Christmas. But I felt so frustrated. We know he can deliver quality balls, but all too often hit the fron man from the oppos rather than Al or Dunc.

Let's hope Diego lives up to his promise.

Take the money - if he's that good @ crosses why has Ferguson only scored 2 with his head so far this season. He gets crosses over but as somebody said last week - to the 12foot man at the far post. Diegos crosses are much more accurate.

#8M + 1 less salary will help YBR get the wage bill down. Young Diego will be better than Nobby in the near future. He's already better at covering back. Look how many times the player Nobby should be covering scores.

Yep -if its true I'm with Jonno - thanks for the effort and good luck in the future.

With the pre-season sale of Haman and the impending sale of Solano for an estimated 8 million I wondered if any of the Dagleish knockers would post and highlight the profit made for the club with these two deals. Not wanting to jump on the bandwagon, although it had crossed my mind to "to restart the legacy thread " using a different firm of accountants, the Kenny out Brigade figures were just so glib !!!!! Anyway it took Jonno to mention it, the man in the front row with the black n white shirt, inciting the rabble (joke), I admire you pal this imbalance would have been knawing at your insides, Charvet will also turn out to be a nice little earner as will Robinson, even make money outta Glass, Solano I did not rate, someone mentioned Hutch and Sinclair, could do worse, Lee has to be replaced,

The thing is, Nobby may never even make it into the Real first team. He isn't THAT good. When you have the sort of aerial talent we have (Ferguson, Shearer, Speed and Dabs can all score with their heads, I'd look like a semi-decent crosser. Sorry, Diego is a gem and much younger.

Buff me old mate. Yes, football is a business these days and the "profit" made on Nobby and Herman looks good on the balance sheet. However, consider the hidden expence. We lashed out circa #6M of the money we got for Hamman on Dyer. Good prospect but hasn't delivered consistently enough. To replace Hamman, we needed to spend am (almost) equivalent amount.

And IMHO, profit on the sale of a player is no way a substitute for an entertaining, successful team.

BTW - how's KD doing these days??

Sell

-- Anonymous, May 02, 2000

Geordie, are you McKeag in disguise?

Sigh....only kidding mate...

8 million is a reasonable price for Solano but yet again we're selling players who've proven to fit into the squad for a quick buck...

It's not like the bad old days but it reminds me of them :((

Gav,

that is the worst thing anyone has ever called me!

:-((

Geordie,

Wow! and I bet you've been called a few bad things in your time ;))

Only joking mate!!! you know I love you really....in a friendly, male, non-sexual kinda way!! ;)

I see there's a report on Sporting Life saying that Gus Hiddink has been sacked in Spain and is a target for Celtic....I bet DogLeash is relieved that he can start avoiding the pressure again!!

He knows he's not cut out for management and runs and hides at the first opportunity!

If we're talking about balancing up the books on TSM's transfer dealings let's not forget JDT, Pamela Andersson, Brady, Cerrant, and Hamilton, plus the loss of Ginola both as a playing asset and on his transfer fee.

Fact is, we're obliged to pay back 5 mills a year to the investors in wor stadium securitisation so I doubt Barclays'll be any more accommodating.

Well, the original story was from TeamTwaddle - here is the follow up..

"Solano mystery ++

Nolberto Solano was a surprise inclusion in Newcastle's line-up last night in the 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough. It is believed the Peruvian star is on his way to Real Madrid in an #8m deal, but he played at right wing back at the Riverside."

They are even querying their own stories now.

Nice one Chevy spotting the teamtwaddle exclusive rebuttal of their earlier exclusive.

>>>>They are even querying their own stories now.

Well if no-one is interested in what you have to say you're obliged to talk to yourself.

-- Anonymous, May 04, 2000

Is that right Jonno? - good to see you on here BTW.

-- Anonymous, May 04, 2000

Thanks Jonno - BTW that "I love you" email you sent me earlier looked a bit dodgy.
