Title: Airport Terminal Power Goes Out, But It Was Planned

Some passengers on flights into Memphis International Airport late Friday and early today were startled when they found the terminal operating on backup generators. But there was no emergency.

Power was cut overnight during a planned power outage to allow work on the 36-year-old building's electrical system.

Passengers used old-fashioned rolling stairs to exit airplanes instead of the electrically powered loading bridges that connect flights to the terminal building.

"We climbed down through the rear of the airplane and they escorted us into the airport," said Cordova resident Charles Alton, who flew in from Detroit shortly before midnight.

Lights to runways and taxiways were not affected.
