"SmartGrowth" is going to make traffic worse. A LOT worse.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

I found a great reference to read for those of you who believe that transit will solve the Puget Sound transportation problems. The URL is http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ohim/womens/chap19.pdf

The state of New York interviewed a LARGE number of people in the New York Metropolitan area. This area has a population density that exceeds anything that the Puget Sound region will have in our lifetimes. Even in the Central area which has some of the most frequent and highest capacity transit in the area, more people commute by car than commute by transit (see table 1). And in the suburbs, where their population density is still far higher than the population density in the Puget Sound suburbs and the transit availability is also much more readily available than in our suburbs, the transit share is STILL only about 10%.

What does this mean? It means that the UGMA may well succeed in increasing the density of the urban areas, but it wont increase transit use enough to offset the increase in congestion caused by the increased population.

UGMA advocates need to find somewhere that increased population has lead to decreased traffic congestion, or just acknowledge the fact that SmartGrowth is actually going to make congestion a lot worse.

Again, what would I-711 do for this issue? The GMA isn't an issue here, and I have yet to see any information on how transit would be affected.

You know zowie once accused me of trying to dodge an existing issue by starting a new thread. But of course that just our own misguided zowie.

What did I dodge? This website isn't devoted to 711. And I hold up my end of discussions, including on 711 on other threads. I'm not dodging anything.

I've posted a NUMBER of threads concerning my belief that transit will never have enough of a market share to decrease congestion, and that SmartGrowth is more likely to make congestion worse than better.

The title of this thread was not in the least misleading, and didn't include anything about 711, so it obviously wasn't deceptive in any way.

If you don't like the topic, Patrick, don't post to it. I'm just exercising my constitutional rights to free speech. While the posting was perhaps not of the quality that Luther posted on the cathedral door at Worms, I didn't think it was all that bad other than the fouled up formating of the table. I did read an HTML book though, and I'm going to try to make it better now.

PS: I like zowie. He's alright in his own crude and lewd way.

Thank you Frank.

If you could now turn off the bold type I'd be eternally in your debt.

I'm learning html, but I'm learning slowly. Old dogs can learn new tricks, but obviously not very fast.

This really does illustrate Craig's point though (neat table!). If even with downtown New York population densities and subways you can't get as many people using transit as using cars, Seattle is going to have to do some MAJOR roadbuilding, or SmartGrowth will bury them in congestion.

Thanks. I'm not sure how (or where) I left of three bold end tags, but it appears to have worked. Muchas Gracias (and have a Happy Cinquo de Mayo).
