Response to "Live" reports from Sweden and Tio-Mila

One day before the start, the first live reports are in.

The weather looks good -- clear, blue sky, 20 C, and dry ground. The weather is expected to hold throughout the event. The only problem reported so far is that cell-phone reception from the competion center has been a bit weak. (Source is www.alternativet.nu).

It is almost time for the women's race to start. The first leg runners are warming up -- most of them are looking nervous. The weather is unusually warm for this time of year. It is sunny and almost 70 degrees.

The women's race is expected to finish around 11:40 a.m. CDT.

A few years ago a male streaker (from a Norwegian university) sprinted in front of the start. He claimed he wanted to see what it was like to be chased by hundreds of women. Could this be Mikell Platt's year?

The women's first leg is underway and my old club, IFK L-o is in the lead group at the radio control (together with a number of other clubs). This is a bit surprising because IFK L-o and IKHP were together at the spectator control (before the radio) and were about 3 minutes behind the leaders. The leaders must have made a big boom because the group was together again at the radio less than 15 minutes later.

Another Swedish club with some US ties is IFK Goteborg -- the club James Scarborough runs for when he is in Sweden. Of course, James has not run Tio-Mila for IFK-G (apparently James is not tough enough...or maybe it is just that he hasn't been there at the right time of year).

IFK Goteborg has lost one of its top men's runners -- Klas Dalberg -- because of wisdom tooth troulbe. Klas' is reportedly loaded up with pain killers and unable to compete. (For the pharmaceutically interested, he is taking 2 x 600 mg Ibuprofen + 3 x 1.000 mg paracetamol).

I'm taking a break from Tio-Mila to go for a bike ride of about two hours. Back around 11-11:30 (CDT). GO LIDINGO!

11:25 a.m. (CDT).

After my bike ride I was anxious to see how the women's race was looking. After three legs, Domnarvet was ahead by six minutes. I think they've got Arja Hannus (a world champ in O' and ski O'). So, it looks pretty good for Domnarvet. IFK L-O is now in third. They're within striking distance of 2nd (and Lidingo has a world champ, Lucie Bohm, on the fourth leg).

What about our favorite women's team, IF Thor 4? After the first leg, they were 24 minutes behind the leader and in 247th place of 327 teams). After two legs, they'd fallen to 260th place. It looks like Sanna -- running the anchor leg -- will have her work cut out for her.

11:30 a.m. CDT. Domnarvet is still leading after the fourth leg. No other teams have finished the leg.

12:10 p.m. (CDT)

IF Thor 4's third leg runner is in...and had a good run. She moved the team up 59 places to 202nd place.

Domnarvet increased its lead to about 10 minutes. Lidingo is now second, but too far back to have a chance. Unless something strange happens.

The anchor leg is underway, but instead of sitting here at the computer, I've got to go out and mow the lawn.

If I'm reading this correctly the race is over, with Domnarvets winning.

12:25 CDT --- top places in the Tva-Mila are posted. Domnarvets won with IFK Lidingo 3rd. The dreaded Norwegians in Baekkelagets SK picked up 5 places to finish 2nd. A good run by Hanne Staff, I guess.

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 29, 2000.

It looks like Domnarvets rather narrowly avoided disaster since they won by less than 2 minutes... their last runner ran badly - over 11 minutes slower than Staff. Was it the pressure that got to her? There are a lot of expectations I'm sure riding on this race.

IF Thor 4 is in and moved up another 8 places to 192 for the hand-off to Sanna! Sanna is in the woods as we speak! --- 1:05pm CDT

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 29, 2000.

The last leg was dramatic (sort of)...Karolina Arewang, from Domnarvet, was running well...then boomed the 6th and 7th controls.

She said, "Jag bommade kontrollen som var i ett grvnomrede. Jag fick ge ut till vdgen bakom 3 genger och ta ny kompassriktning och stega mig in. Tredje gengen gick det dock och jag fann den."

Which means, "I missed the control in the green area. I had to go to the road behind the control 3 times and take compass bearings and pace in. The third time it worked and I found it."

-- Michael (mike_eglinski@kcmo.org), April 29, 2000.

Spike and Mook are conducting a chat session on Yahoo Messenger. Is there anyone else out there? ... word has it that Snorkel will be making an appearance at M and M later on today. Perhaps everyone is waiting for the men's race?

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 29, 2000.

Sanna's result is posted. Her team finished 221st. Apparently she dropped 30 places on her run, but it is good to see he out there. To run an anchor leg in this race is quite prestigious. As Custer said to his men before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, "look at it this way men, at least you're not being asked to run the anchor leg at the Tio-Mila". He said something like that anyway apparently.

I think Sanna did OK proud.
