How Do I Use the 2x Converter Properly?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Pentax 67 SLR : One Thread

My friendly camera dealer has lent me a Pentax 2X Rear Converter and I'd like to find out how to properly use it (no, there wasn't an instruction manual sent with it). This particular device is the older version with the metal grip ring (not rubberized). Do you attach the Converter to the body first, then attach the lens, or does it matter in which order you assemble everything? I have the 45/4, 55/4, 105/2.4 & 165/2.8 lenses - can I use all four lenses or am I restricted to only the latter two lenses? I tried attaching my 105/2.4 to the Converter and can't focus to infinity with this assembly. I managed to scratch the black finish on the rear of my lens in the process. What am I doing wrong, or is this normal? The cap for the front of the Converter seems to slide around without locking into place - is this normal? Finally, any tips on using this gizmo will be appreciated, especially as to which lenses work well with it. Thanks.

Ken, if your converter is the T6-2x rear converter, which is black, it was intended only for telephoto lenses from 135mm to 800mm. The only exception here is the 165mm leaf shutter lens, which will not fit. The front glass of this converter will hit the rear glass of lenses with which it isn't compatable. This may be why the rear glass of your 105mm was scratched and won't focus to infinity. If you have this converter then it will only work with your 165mm/2.8.

I don't have the newer 2X Rear Converter, which is gray and not labled T6, but I have the understanding that it will fit almost all, if not all, 6X7 lenses.

The front cap should fit well, without moving around, but since it is plactic it may be worn out. Try puting it on the camera body and see if it's still loose. Bob
