Info on the Leica Digilux Zoom, please

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Imaging Resource doesn't have a review of this camera (more's the pity). Can anyone direct me to more detailed info than Leica have on their website? And/or is anyone who's got one willing to share their impressions? As for detailed questions... Is the lens really up to the usual Leica standard (relatively speaking the camera is very cheap)? And does the Digicopy negative-copying attachment produce quality "scans"?

I own one. Leica does not produce this camera, it is a rebadged Fuji, basically a Fuji 1700. The lens is Fuji manufacture too. Is it good? All Fuji optics have good reputation, including their enlarger lenses. I am trying to get tips from various website/sources on how to reduce the noise in less than optimum (bright) lighting conditions. The noise can be quite strong in shadows or dark areas of photos taken during early or late part of day. I find the size and build to be great. I take it everywhere. I also own the Fuji 2700 which is a 2.3 mp, fixed lens version, similar in size and configuration as the Leica Digilux Zoom and Fuji 1700.

The Leica is very reasonably priced these days and you won't be wasting your money. Don't have the slide copier.

Got any other questions?

Don

the leica/fuji 1700 is a really great camera.. it won some awards, and check cnet.com's review. it is the only camera with 0 negative reviews. the only thing its missing is USB transfer, but for 439, its a great deal. zoom and battery life are decent, awesome w/o lcd.. dont get the 2700- its older and has slower refresh rates and less buffer memory it seems. i have the 4700 and i love it

Yes, the Digilux is basically a Fuji MX-1700 with leatherette trim. Read our MX1700 review, look at the pictures, and you'll have all the details. Don't know about the Digicopy unit, but I'd like to get one for my own MX-1700. I'd use it for copying slides, doubt it'd do well with negatives: Negatives are pretty weird to convert the color on, due to the orange base material. Possible with Photoshop trickery, but difficult.
