One literary element is macabre. (Believe was pounded into my head. In my 2nd Composition & Rhetoric class in college, we were assigned to read the Cask of Amontillado and write a paper on how macabre was used in the story.)

Gothic writers, and Poe is the master of American Gothic, saw the potential evil in man. They peered into the darkness of the supernatural. Macabre plots, scary creatures, and weird settings with terrifying events are all part of the Gothic tradition that Poe used.

Perhaps Poe was just trying to express himself and that that's the only way he knows how -- through his writings.
