What are some of the literary techniques that Poe used in his short stories

One literary element is macabre. (Believe me...it was pounded into my head. In my 2nd Composition & Rhetoric class in college, we were assigned to read the Cask of Amontillado and write a paper on how macabre was used in the story.)

Gothic writers, and Poe is the master of American Gothic, saw the potential evil in man. They peered into the darkness of the supernatural. Macabre plots, scary creatures, and weird settings with terrifying events are all part of the Gothic tradition that Poe used.
