The computer system at the Utah Division of Corporations is so backlogged that if someone registers a new business name, that registration will expire before it shows up in the system. Some people doing business at the state Commerce Department these days, watching employees shuffle through mounds of paper to find information on Utah corporations, believe it is a hidden Y2K glitch our good public officials didn't tell us about. But this screw-up is the old-fashioned kind.

The Commerce Department converted to a new computer system provided by Automation Systems of Baltimore in December, but problems kept the system from working for several months. The Division of Professional and Occupational Licensing's system became operational in January, but the Division of Corporations' wasn't working until the beginning of April.

Employees are laboring double shifts now to input the crucial information into the system, but it will take several more months to catch up.
