additional question... since the front element is set quit deep in the lens... do i really need a hood?

Does that lens have a metal mount? If so, it's a gem. You probably don't need a hood, but I just use a sturdy rubber screw-in type since the filter ring does not vanish inside the barrel as on some of the zooms.

Upon checking specifications, the Canon hood for an EF 50mm 1.8 lens is ES-65.

I have the 50 f1.8 but the hood for it is hard to get. However the hood for the 50/1.8 Mk II works with it just fine. It includes a step up ring for it. I believe it is called ES-62 and it is screwed on to the front filter attachment ring. It has a filter thread, so you can still add filters to it. I have done so and found no vignetting. A new version ES-62 MK II is out now, with a much deeper hood than my MK I version.

I tried to order the ES-65 once but everyone was out of stock... I found that my ET-65 fits just fine, and is much easier to find. It's also longer (better for flare reduction, especially with filters, or so I assume) than the one I had for my MK2 lens but doesn't vignette.

The hood for the EF35 F2, EW65, also fits the EF50 1.8 mk1, although a little shallow (1 1/8 deep) it does a good job due to the deep recess of the lens element.

I use the EW-65II hood. Fits both the 50mm 1.8 I and the 28mm 2.8. It's a bit shallow for the former, but I don't think that's a huge problem.
