Two pythons found packaged in the mail News-Journal wire services

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Talk about bulk rate postage.

Authorities are trying to find out who packaged two 10-foot pythons and dropped them in the mail.

The package was mailed from the downtown Morgantown post office and contained a fake return address, Morgantown Animal Control Officer Sylvia Smith said Wednesday.

They were mailed to an animal shelter in Arlington, Va.

"What if the box would've come open in the post office? What if the label would've come off and they had to open it?" Smith said. "The Arlington person was flabbergasted when she opened it.

"All they had to do was bring them to the pound, and we would've found a home for them," Smith said.

Smith said the package contained no air holes for the pythons, one of which is albino. Still, the snakes survived.

"They are tropical snakes and need to be warm and humid," Smith said. "I would call it cruelty if nothing else. You just don't wrap up a couple of snakes and mail them." ) 2000 News-Journal Corp. . news-journalonline.com
