FINALLY!! Convert those horrible "real media files" to avi!!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

ok i although im sure other peole have done this before i still have yet to have seen anywhere online/web where someone has posted how to do it, BUT i have found a way!!!.

first: you need to download one of those screen capture programs ( i highly recomend snagit) they are mostly free go to www.downloads.com and type in "screen capture". Make sure the one you get says it can capture video

second: make sure you have the real player (some version) in your system. third: sound, another story i will get to in a few moments

fourth: open the real player, then go under "options", then go under "preferecnes" then click "performance" once here UNCHECK the box that says " use optimized video display" this will stop real player from using your graphics hardware to play its images. This way snagit can capture what is shown. Note you may have to restart your system

fifth: open the real file you want, set up the snagit to capture the window, hit record on snagit and hit play on real once its done you have now made an avi file from a real media file--enjoy!!!

notes make sure you have checked "record with sound" on the snag it. If you do this and you still have no sound here is what to do, instead of running your output wire to your montors speakers (or whatever speakers you have) re-route it so it goes out of your system, BUT back into your "mic" input on your PC. and MAKE SURE the volume is pretty low. what this will do is instead of running the sound out of your system into your speakers, it will run the sound out of your system, but then back into it via the "mic" input which snagit goes for with sound. i made it easier by buying 2- dual headphone adapters at radio shack along with a y-cable adapter (for mic/headphone plugs). This way it splits the sound so i still have my speakers hooked up, but also am able to run the sound into my mic input at the same time. I hope this helps a lot of you out there who were as frustrated as i was with these horrible real files. ALSO very special thanks to snagit who emailed me back letting me know to shut the oprtimized screen off on the real player

Not to mention that this does nothing to get rid of those .rm file errors that can cause real player to crash or "buffer" endlessly. and what about those with computers that cant handel the CPU and Memory hungry new versions of real player? Your caputre will look like coppy crap. Is there anyone who is going to attempt reverse enginering to decypher the encoding of an rm file? Id do it but I need help. contact me if you are intrested.

TINRA (This Is Not Real Anymore) Tinra is a command line based utility used to convert RealAudio and RealVideo to AVI. It converts the file as Realplayer plays it in real time ie it is like a video capture utility where the rgb output is derived from realplayer instead of screen or capture card.

There is also a GUI for it.... :/

Its true tinra works, but it will not work with win2k and will sometimes cause syncronisation problems on your finished AVI files. I also encountered certain rm files that refused to be converted

well i have try to use tinra but it always has a problem, im tring to convert it to a VCD but it just wont work. when played on the dvd player the the video images just go so fast as if being rewind but the sound just stays the same !!!!

Well, I've encountered/tried everything above and unless you've tried, here's two suggestions.... 1)If you have already got an mpeg or avi file from your rm file, use TMPGEnc (just type it in a search on lycos) to make vcd/(s)vcd compliant files that will work fine OR better still, 2)New? program called EO Video - very impressive but also slow....comes with all sorts of options to join/split etc and also converts quicktime... For DivX fans, it will also convert rm to Divx....have fun (did I mention slow) :-)
