Are climbers Urbanites or rural people?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Mountaineering : One Thread

I am working on a project for school (The Evergreen State College) and am looking at the question of why people climb. I am trying to link this to a class that is all about cities. I am wondering if most people that climb are urbanites looking for the chance to reconnect with nature...Or, are they people from a rural area just looking for more extreme connections with nature, spirituality, etc. I would be very interested in any insight you may be able to provide. Thanks!

Your question is too broad. These days there are 10 different types of climbing and the types of people that do them can be very different. For example, these days a fair percentage of climbers only climb in indoor rock gyms, and don't have much interest in climbing outdoors.

Climbing is not done just by people who live in the city. Just becuase someone who lived out in a farm or some hills away from the city dosen't mean that they have no desire to go climbing. Based on where people live cannot answer the question on why someone would climb. People climb because they are alive...
