Canon A50-error message "E17"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Has anyone else ever gotten the error code "E17" in the display panel on the top of the camera? When I turn the camera to "P" position, the lens cover goes up but the lens doesn't come out, then the lens cover closes again and the error message displays. It does it in all "shooting" modes. It plays just fine the the LCD panel displays perfectly. I've had my camera since October and it's worked perfectly until now. I was just wondering if I'm alone on this little mystery or not.

I got the same problem and then searched the internet for E17 and the canon site to no avail. Then I send an Email to canon and they graciously replied to go to the nearest canon service... but they would not tell me what E17 is all about. So with my micro philips screwdriver I took the metal cover off. This is relatively easy to do. Took some of the dents off the cover by tapping them out gently with a rounded punch on cardboard (this happened after carrying the camera in my pocket for 2 years). I blew all the dust off. Also I noticed the shutter was not free to move because of a "wedged" control pin which I guess prevents the motor from turning and therefore E17 error. It is possible that the shutter got bashed in my pocket or there is some wear along the pin/shutter path. Anyway, I wiggled the shutter, bent it back in its "normal" plane, made sure it would move without a hard point, put the cover back on, and bingo it works!

Happened to me, as the previous poster said, remove the cover and de mangle the mechanisims pertaining to the lens cover and what nots... this camera survived a 6' drop onto concrete, and has been beat up since i bought it 3 years ago... (to email me remove the underscore)

by the way...for anyone who's going to respond to this now, the problem was solved almost 2 years ago and the camera has been working fine ever since!
