I was watching Discovery Channel tongiht and I must have missed the part about what section of rain forest was turned into a strip mall.

It seems that Easter has coincided with a decidedly pessimistic turn of mind around here toady.

Exactly which 25000 species? Sounds specious to me.

Then check out EnviroLink, or Environment News Service, or Discovery.com or World Watch Institute, or the Rainforest Network.

It's happening.

All you bleeding for the "rain forests" destruction -- keep just one thing in mind: If people didn't breed like fricking rats, there would be no problem. All those opposed to birth control and abortion, who promote and favor government subsidies of people breeding like fricking rats (income tax deductions, aid to dependent children, public schooling...) and who supposed religious and commercial dogma pumping for increased masses of believers and consumers -- you all deserve to drown in your own and all the wogs' shit.

I didn't see any strip malls, but I took my kids to Costa Rica to see the rain and cloud forests while they still stood. We certainly saw areas where the forests had been stripped clean to raise cattle. In fact, we were walking down a dirt road one day when a herd of cattle ran us off the road.

My daughter took some excellent pictures while we were there. Her concentration was on cattle production and rain forest destruction. She presented the pictures as a school project when we returned, at the request of her teacher.

The unfortunate thing [outside of the loss of the rain forests and the niche the rain forest provided for all species within] is that the soil isn't good enough to support any type of animal feed for more than one season. It's kindof like that stuff we have here in Texas [which ALSO had great trees at one time.]

So the question seems to be, how much more am I willing to spend for a steak, in order that someone *else* can enjoy more rain forest? I'll gladly pay more than I do now, but there must be some limit. I LIKE beef, and I'll probably never even see a rain forest in person.

One way or another, the human population problem will solve itself. IF the solution is catastrophic, I hope it doesn't happen in my lifetime. I don't worry about my children's lifetime; I've been careful not to exacerbate the population problem by breeding.

Communist countries do a shitty job of protecting the environment, just look at the levels of polution in Russia, it's not just a free market problem. But I guess that it is true that the commies aren't raping the rain forest for hamberger meat, since they are all so effing poor that they can't afford a Big Mac.

You know, rain forest is cheap in South America, and I know that there are organizations that pool money from concerned people and buy plots of rain forest in order to save it from development. Instead of whining about it, why not put your money where your mouth is?

Oh, and I have declined breeding as well. It's all of you folks popping out the rug-rats that are really to blame. Especially you ones who let the little tykes get hooked on Happy Meals.

It's cheap in Central America as well, Unk. For MANY years the rugrats recycled and took the recycled goods to a place where they got money. They used the money to purchase these plots of rain forest. This was done not so much so they could enjoy the aesthetics of the rain forests in the future, but because the rain forests support plants and species that have shown to be extremely valuable in medical research. The cure for many diseases may exist beneath those canopies.

Thank-you Anita.

Sometimes I forget that not all of the rug-rats are spoiled tyrants, catered to by guilty conscienced career moms.

"I LIKE beef, and I'll probably never even see a rain forest in person. "

Spoken by one with a big brain and a small mind.

I raised the issue that there are tradeoffs to be made here, relative values in conflict. Surely you can address this issue better than just posting a reflexive attack? You do your cause (whatever it might be) no justice that way, you know.

Exactly who were you calling a toady? :0). It just wasn't clear to me.

Best wishes,,,,,

I saw that "toady" thing after I posted and thought it wasn't such a bad error after all. Maybe just a Freudian slip :^)

You know whats funny? Most of the same people that claim we 'evolved' from lower life forms are the same ones worried about 'other species' being wiped out.

SUVIVAL OF THE FITTEST, BABY!

IF we did evolve and we are the fittest, then we are just taking our place in the world, and it is time for those other 'weaker' species to kick off.

See how inconsistant the atheistic viewpoint is? You can't have it both ways.

-- Dead Darwin (Iw@s.dead.wrong), April 24, 2000.

Some of you clowns don't get it! If the numbers of people keep increasing (as they are) -- that means more farmland paved over for housing, it means more rain forests (sniff) converted to cattle range (or for you dumbass vegetarians -- converted to soybean farms), it means more crap (biological and chemical) into the sewers, then into the lakes and oceans, it means that the cod disapear from New England and the salmon from the Pacific northwest -- because people gotta eat and are eating. Get it?

You can reduce everyone's consumption by 10%, but if you increase the population by 10%, you're back where you started, ecologically. You can reduce consumption by 50%, but if you increase the population by 50%, you're back where you started. What part of this don't you understand? Are you dumbass Christian breeders ignorant or stupid or both? Are you dumbass lefties, so concerned about, "la raza" (whatever) ignorant or stupid or both. (Answer to both questions: Yes)

-- A (A@AisA.com), April 25, 2000.

Ah... "AisA" thank you for that well thought out rebuttal. I can see your keen intellect when you claim that all others who disagree with you are "dumbass, ignorant or both".

If the salmon can't adapt to "more crap" from the sewers, then they aren't fit for the new step in evolution, are they? Same with every other species, my friend. You must follow your belief system to its logical conclusion, must'n you?

Take heart, friend "A", Mankind CANNOT destroy the earth. God has reserved that act for Himself.

"18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen." Taken from the Bible, Paul's letter to the Roman Christians, Chapter one.

Biblethumper:

Since you're quoting Paul, I'd like your opinions on the Atheism thread. How DID Paul's writings ever get into the Bible? He never knew Jesus. He was NOT one of the disciples.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), April 25, 2000.

A, what is "la raza?"

This "dumbass leftie" agrees with you about population. Breeding ourselves off the planet, that's what we're doing. But my GAWWWD,. don't mention birth control!

-- gilda (jess@listbot.com), April 25, 2000.

Anita:

I have not had time to read the athiest thread. But I can tell you Paul was hand picked by Christ himself, on the road to damascus

"9:1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" 5 "Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied. 6 "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do." 7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. 10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, "Ananias!" "Yes, Lord," he answered. 11 The Lord told him, "Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight." 13 "Lord," Ananias answered, "I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name." 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name." 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." "

From the book of the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 9.

I am on lunch right now, so I don't have much time. Judas needed to be replaced, but the disciples were told to "wait for the holy spirit" (Acts 1:4) Instead the acted before the Spirit came, and chose Matthias as the replacement. That is the last we hear of him in Scripture.

Jesus himself picked Paul as the "Apostle to the Gentiles"

He went on to right over half of the New Testament.

Just the short version for now,

Oops, didn't format the best and the colors are off. oh well

(and thats write not "right". hurry hurry....)

Oh and Gilda- Birth control (or conception control) is perfectly alright, but birth control by abortion is considered murder.

Overpopulation will never become a problem, people; God has it ALL worked out. He took care of overcrowding (when the people would NOT disperse at Babel) by confusing their language. He will take care of the wicked and evil in the major cities in the same way he dealt with Sodom and Gomorha.

(Did you know that you can fit the entire population of the world into a few of America's largest states? and with plenty of elbow room to boot!

Did you know that the farmland in North America can easily feed the population of the world, if properly distributed?)

Pretty amazing and uplifting, isn't it!
