Reports that America Online is actively blocking e-mail from a large number people using Pacific Bell's high-speed digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet service have blown a minor technical glitch "way out of proportion," a spokesman for the SBC Inc.-owned phone company claims.
Pacific Bell's Rodd Aubrey told Newsbytes today that "a handful" of the company's Internet-access customers have had mail rejected by AOL servers as a result of AOL's automated approach to identifying messages from bulk-mail spammers.
Aubrey said AOL, like many ISPs, uses technology that attempts to verify the addresses of the machines from which e-mail originates. The approach aims to block spammers who attempt to conceal the ultimate source of their unwanted mail.
A story in the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper this week reported that thousands of Pacific Bell's customers were seeing their e-mail rejected by AOL's spam-protection system.
"It's been blown way out of proportion," Aubrey said. "You're looking at a handful (of customers) who have received mail back."
Aubrey said the problem was related to a misconfiguration of some customers' networking software and that individual cases are being corrected by Pacific Bell technical support staff when customers report bounced mail.
