well...at the beginning of the story it says that he hears things in heaven and in hell....but he also says he is not mad...so duh he is...and when it says he heard a sound..like a watch enveloped in cotten...this is forshawdoing the old mans death at the end..i haven't read the story in a while so that is all i can think of.
