Kenya: Minister partially explains cause of zJanuarty's Kenya Airways crash

By EMMAN OMARI

A hint of what might have caused the crash of the Kenya Airways plane off the Coast of Cote d'Ivoire emerged yesterday.

Cabinet Minister Musalia Mudavadi told Parliament that the plane failed to generate enough power to either gain height or keep afloat.

However, the Minister said a full preliminary report of the January 30, tragedy would be out in 10 days' time. The promise made Speaker Francis Kaparo put off a question by Bumula MP Lawrence Sifuna (Ford-K) for two weeks to give the minister time to get the report.

The plane, flight KQ431, plunged into the ocean soon after taking off from Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. A total of 169 people perished, leaving only 10 survivors.

An angry Mosop MP, Mr John Sambu, said that although he is not an engineer, he knew there was something the government was hiding.

Mr Sifuna wanted to know when the plane was last serviced before the crash.

The MP for Kitutu Masaba, Mr George Anyona (KSC), sought to know who is in control of the investigation.

Mr Mudavadi, the Minister for Information, Transport and Communication, said that in accordance with the International Association of Travel Agents (IATA) rules, the country in which the accident takes place takes charge.

He said aviation experts from Cote d'Ivoire government were working with Kenyan aviation officials. He said they were in Paris trying to put together the preliminary report.

He said the two teams were working jointly with manufacturers of the plane. The results of investigations, he said, will enable the government and Kenya Airways avoid similar tragedies in future.

Good find, Carl. The wires have been awfully quiet about this disaster.
