Here is part of the "Video Resolution Chart" ( table A.17 ) from the book "DVD Demystified" by Jim Taylor. Page 330.

For NTSC with 4:3 aspect ratios.-

VHS : 333x480 Laser Disc: 567x480 VCD: 352x240 SVCD: 480x480 DVD: 720X480

For PAL with 4:3 aspect ratios.-

VHS: 320x576 Laser Disc: 600x576 VCD: 352x288 SVCD: 480x576 DVD: 720x576

Hope this helps you.

There are no pixels with VHS, it's not digital. I know what your driving at, but it doesn't directly compare. Standard VHS composite offers around 180 scan lines of information with color problems because the chrominance and luminance info are transmitted together. SVHS S- video and output from from a laser disc, offer about 400 lines of resolution with separate chrominance and luminance. This is out of the 525 line NTSC broadcast standard. By comparison, DVD offers the full 525 line resolution (albeit highly compressed) with component analog output.

The problems with highly compressed MPEG digital video (blockiness during transitions, difficulty with a constantly changing images) are different than the problems with analog VHS (poor color, dropouts ,inability to capture detail, unstable picture, etc). Any direct comparison is completely subjective.
