In an apparent act of retaliation, a hacker attacked the Web site of the thrash-rock band Metallica and left the message 'LEAVE NAPSTER ALONE.' In another part of the world, backers of the Basque separatist movement appear to be the culprits behind an attack on a Guggenheim Museum site in Spain.

A report in the online, London-based newspaper, The Register, said the attack on the Metallica site seems to be the work of a fan or fans of the Napster program which allows users to download MP3 format music. The band recently launched a lawsuit against the makers of Napster, accusing them of trading in stolen goods.

Meanwhile, in the Basque capital of Bilboa, Spain, hackers allegedly supporting the armed Basque separatist group ETA sabotaged the Web page of Bilboa's Guggenheim Museum, according to an Associated Press report. The intruders tampered with the site Sunday, posting slogans praising ETA and its goal of independence for the Basque region, an area near the border between northern Spain and southwestern France. The site was reportedly disrupted for several hours, and featured photographs of imprisoned ETA members accompanying statements in English calling France and Spain oppressors, AP said.

The Metallica suit was filed earlier this month and accuses Napster of copyright infringement. The case will be heard in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, and is the second such action brought against Napster. The Recording Industry Association of America is also seeking damages and an injunction against the software makers.
