Title: Prolonged Power Outage

KARACHI: Majority of the residents at Abid Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, were deprived of electricity for over 20 hours as one KESC sub-station caught fire and was destroyed completely.

According to a KESC spokesman, fire caused loss of over Rs 2 million to the Cash-strapped power utility, while engineers were investigating the reasons for fire.

The KESC engineers and workers restored the damaged sub-station after a 15-hour non-stop repairs, claimed the spokesman. The 500 households of the area were restored supply within 24 hours of the burning of the sub-station.

The engineers with the help of 750KVA and 500KVA transformers energised the area, the switch-gear was replaced by the Switch Ring Main Unit to control the transformers, the four burnt high-tension cables were also repaired.

Brig Syed Shahid Mukhtar Shah, Managing Director, KESC, visited the site and inspected the installation work of the transformers on Tuesday and commended the efforts of the engineers and workers for accomplishing the job efficiently.

OVERALL SITUATION: Complaints regarding localised faults, feeder tripping and cable faults were reported from Liaquatabad, Federal B Area, Gulistan-e-Jauher, Surjani Town, North Karachi, Baldia Town, Orangi Town, Pak Colony, Lyari and Manora area on Tuesday.

Residents in the area had to experience a humid day of summer amid intermittent power supply in their respective localities.

Earlier, in the early hours on Tuesday, a vast part of districts South and East plunged into darkness as the KESC's 132 KV high-tension lines supplying power, developed a fault.

The supply from Bin Qasim ceased functioning for hours and electric supply to various areas including Defence, Clifton, Gizri, T&T colony, Shah Faisal, Model Colony, old city, Cantt Station could be restored after two-to-five hours.
