West India Gherkins

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Has anyone planted and used West India Gherkins? I planted them one year but didn't have time to do anyting with them, not that I knew what to do with them. They grow very well here. When do you pick them? Hope someone can help. Thanks

Cindy, I've never grown West India Gherkins, but I have grown some varieties- can't remember the names. Gherkins are just little cukes, maybe 3 inches long, aproximately pointer finger size. I make sweet pickles with them. The tiny ones are the best and I have started canning dills that are only 2- 3 1/2 inches long.

We grew the West India Gherkins one year -- I don't think they GET three inches long!! I seem to remember that they stayed very small, and that they were quite spiny. You could probably use any pickle recipe for them.
