When did Doug find out that Carol was pregnant?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

I've searched the summaries and i'm currently watching old episodes but i just can't seem to get a grip on how she told him. Did the fax go through? What was his response, if any? Any input would be helpful because I'd like to figure it out before she leaves. Thanks

I think she called him after she found out, and he asked if she wanted him to come home. She said no, so he didn't.

i thought in the episode "power" she finally got the fax through and left a message on the machine.

I'm not sure of the definite episode, but it was during late season five, the one where Elizabeth loses the trauma fellowship to Peter. Doug calls, probably after recieving the fax, and Mark finds her and offers to take her for a milkshake. Elizabeth goes too, cuz she lost the fellowship so all three go to drown their sorrows in milkshakes at midnight. Don't ask me where, I thought ice cream places were closed by then. Anyway, I'm thinking the "phone call" happens in Responsible Parties.

Thanks for the answers, interesting that people have different ideas of when it took place. Joanne was right, thanks a lot.

It was definetly "Responsible Parties"...the second or third to last episode of last season. The one where Carter, Lucy, and Mark are working on the burnt prom-goers. Carol had tried to send the fax in "Power", but hence the title "Power" the power went out and it didn't get faxed. The following episode (responsible parties) she successfully sent it at the same time she called and left a message on his machine. At the end of the episode Doug calls her at work and we find out when she talks to Mark afterwards that he offerd to come but she asked him not to.

I don't know where everyone is getting this. I got the impression that after the fax didn't go through, she left some vague message on his machine and he called back. We never found out if she told him. We never found out that he asked her if she wanted him to come back. I never saw any of this....and I know I saw those epis. Maybe I missed something, but I really believe that there's some kind of wishful thinking that goes on when people start talking about Carol. We want her to be the fairly likeable character that she started out as, and for some reason, people tend to ignore the negative aspects as they come up. JMHO.

No honestly. In Responsible Parties, Carol sends the fax through and leaves a message on Doug's machine telling him to call her. Later in the episode, he calls the hospital. When Mark comes in to see her, she is upset and says he isn't coming. She's glad because she doesn't want him to come just for the baby. That's what she says. So she had to have told him on that phone call. Then she and Mark go for milkshakes, and he pays because she's eating for two (actually three but she didn't know that yet!)

Joanne, I'll take your word for it (at least until I can see the episode again). I always found it rather shrouded in mystery, partly because no one knew whether Clooney would come back.

I stand corrected.

She DEFINATELY told him. After the fax went through she called and left a message on his machine, telling him to "sit with" the news for awhile before he called her back. She hesitated as if she really wanted to say something else, then backed out and ended the phone call. So later on, when she was crying in the lounge when Mark came in, that was after Doug called but it wasn't the phone call that let him know about the babies. It was the fax that we SAW go through, and what other news in it would Doug have to "sit with"? Besides, Carol had Mark read the letter and asked what he thought of it. So I suppose we're led to believe that Doug may have offered to return, but Carol was very "clear" and told him not to. Because it's his nature to wait her out, that's exactly what he's doing here.

Yes, she told him in "Responsible Parties," and yes, she asked him not to come, and yes, she cried and cried because he took her at her word and didn't. It made no sense, except maybe to the writers, who were stuck with a situation in which they couldn't get Clooney back to the show, so they had to make up something for Carol to say to explain Doug's no show. I found it totally unrealistic.
