London: Gieves and Hawkes, the Savile Row tailor and supplier of pinstripe to the City, was yesterday rueing its attempt to become supplier of hamster to the trendy.

The outfitters, which supplies suits and uniforms to the Prince of Wales and Duke of Edinburgh, had intended to include a hamster fur jacket in its autumn collection for younger men. The jacket, said to contain the pelts of 100 farmed hamsters, was to be offered on a bespoke basis from next month for about stg3,000. But no sooner had news of the jacket been made public than the tailor was condemned by the RSPCA and other animal welfare groups.

James Whishaw, Gieves and Hawkes' design director, yesterday announced his company's decision to ditch the jacket. He said: "The use of leather and animal fur for clothing, accessories and footwear is generally accepted as part of a luxury product offering. However, Gieves and Hawkes accepts that the use of farmed hamster fur has offended some people. Gieves and Hawkes have made only one such jacket, and intend to make no more."

Gieves and Hawkes recruited Mr Whishaw from Calvin Klein to modernise its stuffy image. Founded in 1785, the outfitters has supplied Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington, earning a reputation for sobriety and quality.

Exotic furs and skins have caused controversy in fashion before. Last year the Italian duo Dolce and Gabbana were condemned when it was claimed they had used a Chinese cat in a creation. They denied the allegation. Alberta Ferretti used coyote in a pair of shorts and Tom Ford of Gucci used mink tails to decorate the hems of jeans.

Nicky Haslam, the interior designer and style commentator, said: "Jackets made from hamsters? It sounds just as appalling as having a coat made from the family labrador."

Yes, it's disgusting. But what I want to know is this...why does the thought of mice and rats being exterminated NOT bother you, if this does? It ALL makes me ill.

You tell 'em cin! Squirrel King and his ilks aren't nothin' but bigots! Them big shots get all upity about having their pelts fashioned into some princely jackets, but would not give it a second thought if the Gieves & Hawkes and Gucci's of the world used rats and mice instead.

So much the better for us lowly rodents. It's the designer's lost. Ha!

I bought one. It was so handsome! Trouble is, everytime I wore it I had this uncontrollable urge to run on a treadmill.

nemesis -- don't say that! If word gets out, every employer in the World will make hamster jackets required wear on the job.

True story. WARNING not for the squeemish. I went to high school back in the days when advanced biology students disected 10 or 12 week old cats. That, of course, was back in the days when a lot of us thought that gross things were cool. We had this annoying student teacher in British Lit., so we made her a "kitty stole" from the skins of all the cats (one had to skin them first before disection). We washed all the skins in Castle soap so they wouldn't smell, and then one of the gals (who is now a vet) sewed the skins together -- it was a little stole, about 5" wide and 3' long.

We presented it to her when we finished "The Taming of the Shrew."

I've never seen anyone leave a room so fast...

We found out later that she decided to go for her MFA so that she didn't have to teach high school students.

I suppose that today we all would've been suspended or something. As it was, the principal just made us apologize.

Hampster coats? I'll bet that Hawk would love one make from another type of little rodent.

HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEH!!!!!!

cin, I'm with you on this.

notme, you just made my day. I'd been house cleaning, which always puts me in a bad mood, then the printer on my computer quit, I lost an important piece of paper, etc. Then I came on here and saw the singing hampsters and it really cheered me up. LOL! My inner-child is delighted!

More graphics folks, I love 'em!

Pieter & Rodent Supporters:

The rodents, rodentia, and lagomorphs have already had their revenge for deeds done during my wayward youth. When I first moved into my present abode, I planted about $100 worth of daylilly bulbs. By bloom time, only a dozen were left, and the rabbits got those, so no day lillies that year. The next year, they got all the new spring wild flower bulbs. This year, I planted species roses. I'm sure some hamster is already planning how to lure the Japanese Beetles over from Dublin to infest my new plants.

Sure! Put me on your list. As long as I don't get taken away during Hamvention Weekend!
