HP Scanner not repairable

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have an HP 5100C Scanner 18 mths old and until 3 days ago I was very pleased with it and also recommended it to lots of friends. However yesterday it developed a greating noise ( like gears slipping )So I called two different Chain Computer Stores with good service depts' to have it repaired and they both told me that HP Scanners are not repairable. This makes me sick as I purchased it for $399.00 Canadian. I sent an Email to H P service and have not had a reply. Norman Howard, Email : normanhoward@home.com

We had the same thing happen.. we were told by a local service guy that it would cost more for the parts than it would cost to buy a new one. He thought it was a control board or something similar. HP has a flat $150.00 fee to look at it..and then a 90 day warranty after repairs.. It is a sad commentary on products are made by some of these companies today.

Good luck!!!

To CHIP, Thank you for answering my letter to this Forum. If I do not hear from HP regarding their scanner within the next few days. I will spend hours and hours and hours on the internet and everywhere else telling the world about my $399.00. 18 mth old 5100C H P Scanner ! I am retired so have lots of time ! Bye norman Howard

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with the 5100, its a well built scanner but like anything in the under $500 price range, it often costs more to repair than replace. I work for CompUSA and often hear this story, they do sell extended warranties for what its worth and you can get the scanner fixed at no cost for periods longer than the manufacturers period. In a little non related issue, I often get people in saying " I bought this camera on ebay and it crapped out on me, or my buddy gave me a printer and its printing garbage could ya fix it? . Its always no, hell you can buy an Epson 740 for a hundred bucks with new ink!, why fix an old broken printer? As for the 5100, don't bother fixing it, go buy an Epson 610 for $149, its better than the HP anyway, just make sure you have USB ports. This whole situation has been caused because everyone wants great products dirt cheap, I'm not referring to you in particular Mr. Howard but if you look at an Apple II or an original IBM PC, you could drop them off a bridge and they'd still work, the same cannot be said for much of the products built today. Of course most people think cheaper is often a better deal, until I tell them it costs $400 to fix a broken Mavica they bought on EBAY for $300, great deal...

HP are very unhelpful regarding repairs on kit over 12 months old.

My Hewlett Packard 5100C has developed a noise very similar. I think the sensor has failed at the end of the first pass. However you try and get a wiring layout diagram for the 5100C.

If I could get a wiring diagram I could buy the part from a store. Anyone got such a thing?

The whole situation reminds me of a book I read years ago written by an American called ‘The waste makers’ I think the written was Lance or Vance Packard.

I got a 5100c i had for about 2 years it work perfect till then. then I got a grind noise found out it was the belt slipping.I try to order.a new one and a tenson spring the say it's not orderable .do you still have your scanner? want to sell some parts ? hate to throw my $300.00 scanner away because of the belt and spring. I bought a used 5100c at a a garage sale for $10, worked OK for a few months, and then same thing- grinding noise and belt slipping. I've also noticed that the images produced have horizontal lines in them. HP's web site suggests that the belt or carriage stops could be the problem. I have no doubt that the cost to have them fix it will far exceed the cost of a new one, so I may just pry this thing open and see if I can fiddle with some set screws. I'll let you know if it works.

My HP5100C should be good for parts. The drivers never worked so its been resting since I purchased it. I'm sure the gears aren't worn out.
