Accuracy Of Passion Play And Movies

Here is a question... why do the movies and passion plays about Christ's death generally get it wrong? For example, I too have been to the play in Wachula, and I thought it was great, but many scholars will agree that Jesus did not carry the whole cross. What Jesus carried was the patibulum or the cross beam section of the cross which weighed 75lbs through the street called Via Dolorosa "the way of sorrow" to the hill of Calvary. I am not trying to nit pick, but it bothers me that we do not see enough of the pain and horror that Jesus really went through. Many of the movies that portray his death- show little if any blood. But the fact is Jesus' face was so swollen that he was disfigured according to the trial accounts and to Isaiah. The scouraging, left Jesus half dead- due to the severety of the wipping from the "scorpion" that tore through Jesus' flesh. I personally feel, if everyone knew how much Jesus willing went through for them- we would have many more conversions than we do.

I guess, it goes back to all movies from the Ten Commandment to Noah or Prince Of Egypt that largely ignore biblical fact and present what they choose too. Any thoughts?

Don't know how long ago you saw the Wauchula play, they seem to change it a little each year... but this year it was quite graphic as to the blood, etc...

Parts of the play were enhanced with elements that may not have been historical.... like uniformed children with trumpets in a procession to the manger...

But this was artistic license which led to the overall wonderful impression left on the audience... Music background was there too, creating a lasting image... but nobody would nitpick about that...

Your point is well taken, but, at least for this performance, nitpicky.

Danny,

Couldn't agree with you more.

Danny and D.Lee, Ok so if a person who is guest preaching at your church were to suddenly announce that Baptism is not a part of the salvation process- and everyone listening should just pray Jesus into your heart.... it does not matter they are only sincere! Or if an Elder satarting to teach false doctrine, hey it is ok 'cause they are sincere!

You guys need to think through your answers more carefully- for it does matter whether we are accurate or not!

Here's one you might want to check out. The following comes from an email I received Tuesday afternoon:

http://abc.go.com/primetime/movies/miracle_maker/main/index.html

"ABC will be airing "The Miracle Maker," a claymation of the life of Christ on Resurrection Sunday (Easter) evening between 7pm and 9PM EST - it is Biblically accurate (except for a couple of minor chronological events) and is extremely well presented, according to the Dallas guys who reviewed it. They say it is the first presentation as a man that you would (as Peter puts it) want to go fishing with. The Death and resurrection is extremely well presented - especially the crucifixion Typically ABC airs the 10 Commandments in this slot. ABC is experimenting with Christian programming. They are NOT promoting it - not spending $1 on advertising it. The idea is to see what the viewing will be. This will determine if the "Christian" block is real or not! So even if you aren't going to be home - turn it on! List the sponsors and write and tell them how much you appreciate their sponsoring the show -and if possible support their product in the next couple of weeks. Word (KWRD 94.9fm) Radio, Dallas broke the story today. So now get the word out and lets show them how we can rally around something good" Darrell H Combs

AKelly -- Maybe Danny "mumbled" a bit with his last sumission ... it would have been very hard to understand what he was saying with his tongue so firmly jammed into his cheek!

AKelley,

Danny (I'm sure, though I haven't spoken directly to him) and I were just using a little sarcasm to make a point.

You of course are absolutely right!!!!
