HEADLINE: Continental Plane Lands Safely After Reporting Landing Gear Problem

04/14/2000

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- A Continental Airlines jetliner returned safely to Newark International Airport this morning after the pilot reported a landing gear problem.

Flight 1141 left Newark for Atlanta at 6:45 a.m. carrying 116 passengers.

A short time later the pilot declared an emergency and reported he was turning back because the nose gear would not retract properly, said Continental spokeswoman Michele Treacy.

The pilot dumped fuel before returning to the airport, said Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Emergency crews stood by as the MD-80 aircraft touched down without incident at about 8:30.

Passenger Erica Conaty, 28, of New York, said passengers assumed crash positions with their arms crossed on the seats in front of them, but said the landing was very smooth.

''It was extremely calm, and the flight attendants kept everyone calm,'' she said. ''The captain did a perfect job.''

After landing, the aircraft was towed to the terminal, and passengers were put aboard other flights.

Dee, I don't know you, but you keep coming with the info. Thank you. Two years ago, a plane programmer told me ( after I pressed him to really think), that there might be a problem with the landing gear he had seen programmed in the 80's. Through the kindness of others, like yourself, I can see continued news scoops of landing gear and smoke in the cockpit problems. Amazing, isn't it, while we watch on the sidelines.
