"Last Names" mention (SPOILERS)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

Here's what I got:

When Luka said the "Hathaway" twins, I don't believe he was referring to them in that way meaning they bear her last name -- he was simply saying *HER* kids. She quickly reacted with, "Ross. Their last name is Ross." It seemed almost reflexive, and the look on her face was "Wow." I believe it was a way to remind him that somebody else helped to make those kids and they DO have a father...not because she neccessarily feels he's trying to take Doug's position, but because she personally is struggling with the issue. JMHO, and if anybody has any thoughts on this, please do add them. :-)

Response to My Personal Analysis of the "Last Names" mention -- for those who care to read it (SPOILERS)

I think a lot of people make the same mistake and she has had to correct them. She seemed like she is tired of people making assumptions not that she is struggling with her own issues.

Leigh, I agree that she is struggling with her own issues of the girls needing a father. I dont't think it was necessarily aimed at Luka for thinking he is trying to take Doug's place. I am sure it is a common mistake and one she has to correct often, which I am sure is very frustrating. I really think Luka thinks that Carol should be with Doug. Remember that one epi with the two brothers and he said family should never be apart? I think that is what he feels about Carol.

That's interesting that Carol chose to give her babies Doug's last name, when Doug doesn't appear to be taking any role in their upbringing (unless there's some behind-the-scenes stuff!) I would have thought they would either be Hathaway or perhaps Hathaway-Ross ... I guess it's one more reason I really wish the writers would have shown us more of Carol's personal life and what the heck is going on with Doug.

According to Mark, Doug does see his daughters, so he is involved in their upbringing to some extent.

But when does he see them?

-- Lisa (Shaniakicks@hotmail.com), April 14, 2000.

That's what I'd like to know...when? And Mark's response sounded plural to me. Wasn't it "he sees them?" "Sees" is, to me, ongoing, more than once as opposed to he's seen them, which could be singular or plural. Maybe I'm wrong about the way he said it, but when he did, I remember thinking it was said in a way that made me think he meant more than once. They're only five-six months old, for goodness sakes, and he lives more than half way across the country.

Mark definetly said "Doug's been seeing them", meaning more than once. So although I'm glad he doesn't look like such a jerk now, I thought that if she hadn't seen him all this time, suddenly seeing him again would make her realize how much she loves him. But she HAS seen him and it's still taking her awhile to decide to be with him despite that, and she's still being very friendly with Dr. Luka.

...and out of nowhere...WHAM! Doug has not only met Kate and Tess, he's seen them more than once! They're now the Ross twins, after months of not even a mention of their father. Oh, and suddenly Carol's chatty about her personal life with Carter AND Greene ALL IN ONE EPISODE!!! Looks like somebody decided that they had better get the show on the road, because after all, Carol's taking off soon. I was beginning to take bets on whether Doug's NAME had been "Bobbed". Whew. Now we know so much more. Quite personally, I think this was handled in the shoddiest fashion possible. I just don't get it. I really have to agree that at least we could have seen the call, a letter, SOMETHING! It is plausible that he could come out to see the girls on a regular basis, it IS only a 6hr flight, but c'mon, couldn't we have heard SOMETHING earlier on. Bleah.

Remember back to the previews, when most of us thought the letter was from Doug and then she said he wanted her to move to Seattle with him. I just think it's ironic that the latter was true but the former was a letter to Lucy. Just wanted to make that comment because it shows how the previews don't really tell us much!

I think that the writers do not care of us. They consider that we can eat whatever they give us. And the screenplay nowadays is unbelievable, "hazed and confused", etc. The characters were easy to understand and trust through the early seasons, but now they are too difficault to follow.

Re: "Doug's been seeing them." That totally threw me off. Why is Mark telling it to Carol like it's news to her? Or is he just gently reminding her? And does it have to be in person? It could mean just pictures. But how is it possible that Doug's been schlepping back to Chicago from Seattle and what, visiting the babies while Carol's at work? Maybe he stays with her mom, who of course has also dissappeared. It's all very strange. Grrrrr...

It sounded like a reminder, that he's been interested enough to see them and be in their lives some. It did not sound like pictures but in person.

-- Diana (dilynne@juno.com), April 17, 2000.

I'm surprised that there wasn't more of an outcry when Carol said that her children had the last name of the absentee father. Personally, I was disgusted.

Here she is, raising her children by herself, yet she gives in to the patriarchal culture that says that it is the father's lineage that matters.

Grrrrrr.....
