Water Infrastructure Needs $1 Trillion Over Next 20 Years

Environmental, public health, and economic gains made since 1970 could be threatened without a significant new investment in drinking water and waste water infrastructure, a report released by water treatment groups April 12 said.

The report, Clean and Safe Water for the 21st Century, by the Water Infrastructure Network, estimates $1 trillion will be needed over the next 20 years to address this infrastructure need and calls on the federal government to help finance it. WIN consists of drinking water, waste water, state and local government, engineering, and environmental groups.

The $1 trillion figure is the estimated cost for capital investment in plants, water distribution systems, and waste water collection systems. The group advocates a "significantly enhanced federal role" to help pay the cost to rehabilitate an aging water infrastructure system and to build new capacity to serve a growing population.
