Must admit Jay, it worries me how quickly we end up back in the `one up front` situtation. (:o(

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

And who do we have to cover for him???

Kets ???? or Gallacher? and eve Dyer at one point?? I like a nice 4-4-2 with Gallacher just playing behind the front two.

Gav mate you kill me with all thatsScintillating wit and repartee !!!!

Keep it coming ;o))

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

Jay,

Actually as has been pointed out many times before...I've only got half a scintilating wit......

I say keep him....we're still to see the best of him yet, I'm convinced...we do however need someone else apart from KETS as backup striker behind Gallacher....Ketsbaia was even worse than usual when he came on at Wembley....

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

We sure as f'#k could have done with him last night. In the second half, Shearer put in another beautiful cross, but Dyer was never going to get his head anywhere near it. It's not so much getting rid of Duncan, but getting a good third striker. It really wouldn't surprise me if Shearer picked up a niggling injury now - he's put his heart into a lot of games recently, with little time to rest. I'm getting as depressing as Dougal - must be the weather as I can't think what else there is to get depressed about.

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

It's glaringly obvious we need a third striker. Hopefully we play Shearer with another, either Dunc or the new man. I'm sure that Dunc would be the first to admit that he needs a bit of rest every now and then.

The midfield needs sorted out big time. Sell Solano and play Dyer on the right, he offers much more and I don't think we can afford to play him in the middle.

We are crying out for a left winger, Domi is not that man he's a left back. Then we can sort out the centre. A very good defensive midfielder who can pass well is urgently needed to cover the back four. Then we can afford the playmaker who we haven't had for a long time.

Until we do this we are not going to be top six. Straight 4-4-2 no man in the hole rubbish...not that many players needed so hopefully we can afford quality not quantity.

1) A1 will give his all for England in the Summer. If good he'll come back puffed out, he's no spring chick and he doesn't take enough holidays. If he's bad the papers will murder him.
2) Dunc - you know his history.
3) Kets is a fav of mine but he's a headless chicken.
4) Weeman is good but he's a squad player.
5) Dyer is still learning.
6) Robinson fingers crossed.
7) Maric? What's gone wrong there please someone tell me? I'd take #500.000.
8) Sparrahark? We need someone, but who and for what price I know not?

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

We ar eno better than the Mackems up front. Two players to choose from, an injury and we're completely knackered.

Chelsea have Weah, Sutton, Flo and Zola. Arsenal have Bergkamp, Kanu, Henry, Suker. Man U have Cole, Yorke, Solskjaer, Sheringham. Liverpool have Owen, Fowler, Camara, Heskey and that Finnish guy. None of these teams seem to have them all fit at the same time which I think just emphasises the need to have as many of them as possible.

Dalglish did inherit a front three of Shearer, Ferdinand and Tino so we were close, but going down that route just winds me up.

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

Should Robinson be given a chance on Saturday then???

He scored in the reserves

Jay

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

I think Robbo is a promising player, but we need proven talent and our little ginga Mackem is only starting to show. His inconsistency (as well as bust up with YBR) doesn't help, and I don't see him being any better than Kets at the moment.

The season's over, folks. Let's just hope for no major injuries, let Solano f**k off to Spain if that's what he wants and spend the #4m+ on a decent striker.

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

The most likely scenario in any other team would be that Robinson got his chance. Unfortunately when he plays first team or scores one in the reserves he thinks he's bliddy Ronaldo.

No sooner than he scores for the reserves than he's saying "did the boss see it" or something to that effect. I know he must wish Robson was watching him all the time but he doesn't need to be so arrogant about it.

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

I think Robinson's attitude over the last 12mths has coloured a lot of opinions about him....remember when were all screaming for him to be included :))

He had a few chances under Gullit....looked reasonable in a very poor team but was poor in front of goal....I'm personally not convinced about him...he needs to be scoring a LOT more regularly for the reserves to get my attention...

Talking of Sparrowhawk, the West HAm program suggested his nickname was Pamplona or something like that, meaning wild horse or such like. No mention of a Sparrowhawk. Any idea where they got this from?
With Robinson, YBR has once again shown some managerial asuteness. Robinson now knows exactly where he stands and what he has to do, and has seemingly accepted this. YBR (or was it Steve Clark?) openly said that he had a lot to offer but could be 'frustrating'. Continue to manage him well and there's every chance he'll develop into a very useful talent. Our problem now is that it's unlikely we'll get into Europe, so it won't be easy to keep 3 or more top strikers happy. I would therefore rate Robinson's chances of some first team football next season quite high.

Liverpool have Owen, Heskey, Fowler and Camara. How long do you reckon that Camara will want to play 4th fiddle. He might not be a world beater but he'd do a job for us. Softie said the same after the reserves game 'I'd rather have their bald third choice striker than ours'.

Any one disagree?

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

You're just trying to depress me. Get Coppinger back in for God's sake. He's scoring for Hartlepool and is great in the final third...you know, the bit Robinson, Ketsbaia, Dyer and Solano all have such trouble with.

Gavilan has the 2 nicknames. That other one means 'horse like the wind' which Bobby didn't think translated very well :-)

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

Softie,

I thought that was Screacher's nickname following Saturday night?

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

Hee hee! Actually, it wasn't Screacher on the beanbag. It would have to be someone pretty thick-skinned who isn't afraid to ruffle feathers. Who could it be? Hmmmm.

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

True, the word 'wind' has so many smutty overtones. Nobody in their right mind would 'chose' to have a nickname like that ;-))

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

One of you lot sleep on a bean bag on saturday???

Whats the matter too wimpy to use the floor :o)))

Jay

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

I think the beanbag was employed in the same way that a trumpeter uses a mute...;-)

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

I've seen Maric a few times. Couple a times for the first team, couple a times for the stiffs. He maddens me because he has talent and brains. I'm convinced when he leaves he'll do a good job elsewhere. I would be delighted if he were to come good. Can't see it but.
If I were Bob I would try the following:
1) Put my arm around him and say "Silvio we all love you". 2) Put me size nine up his arse.
3) Say "Silvo how on earth can a man with your gifts, gifts given to you by God, turn out to be such a TWAT".

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

For tonal effect? Obviously quite a talent, then. I don't know what you're all complaining about ;-)

-- Anonymous, April 13, 2000

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We need more than 2 top class strikers. Look at the opposition.

Heskey, F***er, Owen, Camara

Cole, Sheringham, Yorke, Solskjaer

Zola, Weah, Sutton (OK, OK) Flo

Kanu, Bergkamp, Henry, Some-other-Johnny.

Get the picture? I'm sure YBR knows, but he hasn't got the money (yet) to spend, due to profligate manager's before him. Few pf those mentioned above (F***er and Owen excepted) were home-grown. The rest were bought having already made a name for themselves.

We all know, Bobby knows, we need at the very least a third striker.

I don't think selling Ferguson is the answer, as we buy one replacement and we're back to square one in that we only have two strikers.

Bobby has said that he will be after a striker in the summer. However, unless the transfer listed players raise some serious cash + one or more of the first teamers are sold and add to the coffers, I think Robsons spending money will be limited. I have read that the board will back Robson with 10 million pounds. Out of that Robson has to get a defender, 2 midfielders and a striker.

Therefor I am of the opinion that Robson won't be able to go for the quality of striker we would hope for. However we could get lucky by getting a striker via a free Bosman transfer. Anyone know of any that would come to the Toon in preferance over some southern or european based team?

I therefor come to the conclusion that Bobby should try and Shop locally, i.e. the EPL or England. I would also apply the stipulation that the player has to be youngish, i.e under 26.

EPL options:

Carl Cort - rumoured to cost around the 5 million pound mark, which possibly would be out of Robsons range. Has had a break out season with 17 goals in all comps. 9 in the premiership.

Stan Collymore - what can I say. Peoples personnal opinion of Collymore count against him more than his football abilities count fro him.

Anyone from one else from one the Bottom five teams. Can you seriously name a decent striker? Strupar from Derby?

Nationwide League:

Gudjohnsen from Bolton - Canny young player Robson has had before. Valued at around 5 million pounds, see Cort. 17 goals in all comps, 10 in league.

Lee Hughes from West Brom - He won't leave.

Anyone from Charlton, Man. City, Ipswich or Huddersfield is out of the question as those teams are unlikely to sell.

You new it was coming. Clinton Morrison from Crystal Palace - Wadsworth rates the kid. Becuase of Palaces' predicament he'd be relatively cheap. 13 goals total for season, 11 in league. Has missed at least 2 months, and 17 games, of the season due to injury. + We'd also possibly get Hayden Mullins, Palace's captain and defensive midfielder. Is second top scorer with 9 goals, 8 in league. Wadsworth also rates him.

Lee Hughes I have always rated....but would he fit in with our 'sytle' of play theres always Horsefield from Fulham.

He is a very physical player could bounce well off Al or Dunc

Jay

-- Anonymous, April 14, 2000

I forgot. Fulham is unlikely to let any of their strikers go either.

-- Anonymous, April 14, 2000

If players want to go they will.

Look at Nobby he claims to know nothing about a Real Madrid offer, but I bet he is over there playing for them come the summer

I see Suker (spelling?) will be available on a free at the end of the season. I think he'd be worth the wages for a couple of year, whilst not particularly quick he s very skillful and would help to unlock defences. Give us a bit of variety and all that. Sign him and someone quick and I think we'd have a forward line up that would be as good as anyone elses in the premier.

Sorry I mean squad, we would certainly be able to cover for injuries and bring that one thing we haven't had for ages competition for places

-- Anonymous, April 14, 2000

I said on an earlier thread, Fergy to go to the Turks, wasn't there a story about a 10 Million offer? Solano to Spain for say 7 or 8 million that would leave about 3 million for YBR to find for Van Nistleroy, Pick up Suker from the Arse cheap and we have 3 strikers at little cost. This would leave the rest of the kitty to secure Helder and a couple of starting midfielders. Remember Tre we need the Strikers to be able to walk into the team, not to be developed or uncertain (Morrison) if they will make the grade. We will be in that position in a year or so.

Now we need a squad of 16 who could get a game in any premiership team. Just look at the top 5 teams, who would you not want to place in our team?

Please place prejudice to one side after reading the above para!!

How fast can Lee Hughes hop? He's broken his leg ;-)

Did Lee Hughes ever marry that lap dancer ???

Gus

I don't think Clinton Morrison is untested. He's been very consistant for the last two years, and has shown some very good improvement this season.

I was just following up on the statement Arsen Wenger made when he said top EPL team need four top strikers.

Well I don't think we'll be in the market for two top strikers this summer. I really think we'll be luck to get one. I've just read on Soccernet that Robson has been guaranted a 20 million transfer kitty. Take 3 to 4 million out for Helder, that leaves around 16 million to spend on at least three more players.

What I was advocating was that Morrison would make a great 4th striker. He sure is a lot better than Paul Robinson. He's young and realises he's still a developing player so, while he wouldn't be happy being on the bench a lot, he'd understand the situation.

Also Mullins had another great game on the weekend for Palace. Both of these young players really are Premiership quality and would not be out of place in the EPL or NUFC.

I agree that NUFC need a minimum of 16 players that would be atuomatic starters on any EPL side, however it is the depth down to 22 players that is important as injuries and a long season take their toll. I think for a possible maximum outlay of 4 million pounds we'd get two very good, young english players who strengthen much needed areas in our squad. Mullins behind Lee, and Morrison 4th striker.
