Girly Girls

Sigh. I'm having a girly girl confessional day. What do you do when your boyfriend isn't around? Guys, what do your girlfriends do that you just think is beyond bizarre? Make me feel better...

I don't really understand girly girl stuff -- meaning makeup and hair glop and all that kind of stuff. I just don't understand why anyone would want to waste their time and money... But I've never really had a serious relationship with anyone who was into all that kind of stuff. I can remember one of my college rooommates was involved with a girl who literally took half an hour with makeup before being able to go out on a date and so we always had to factor in time for her to get painted whenever the group of us would go out. Very strange. However, I tended to date girls who did not bother much with anything more than lipstick except for very special dressup occasions... and usually not even lipstick.

I don't understand hair color. My wife colors her hair. Whatever. It's her hair so she can do what she wants with it. I'm comfortable having grey in my hair, but even if it bothered me I don't think I'd want to waste my time coloring it (the smell of those chemicals is horrible). My daughter (just a few weeks short of 18) has been coloring her hair all the while she's been in high school and now my son (3 yrs younger than her) has been both blue and blonde in the past few weeks.

I don't understand piercings at all. Oh, okay, ears, yeah. My wife didn't get her ears pierced until after our daughter was born. Our daughter doesn't even want to have her ears pierced (although we have always told her she could) although some of her friends have multiple piercings -- ears, eyebrows, nose, lips, I shudder to think.

My wife (a middle school math teacher) has taken to putting on lipstick and brushing something onto her face before she goes to work in the morning, something she never did in all the years when she worked in software. I don't know if that's a school teacher thing or a mid-forties thing or a late-blooming girly girl thing. It doesn't bother me and if it amuses her, why not? However, I am very glad that she isn't into that whole creams and powders and eyeliner and eyeshadow and whatever the hell... because I really don't like that whole girly girl painted face covergirl look... which is probably why I've never been in a relationship with anyone who did that kind of stuff... I never would have asked them out in the first place.

Jim,

I'm with you. I've never really been attracted to girly girls, I've never seriously dated anyone who wore makeup. Of course this may explain why most of the women I am attracted to turn out to be lesbians. Who knows?

I'm a very nonvisual person, which sets me apart from my friends who are almost all visual artists. They are all stylish in one way or another, they all dye their hair and spend hours thift store shopping and coming upw ith cool outfits. I just wear cargos ant black t-shirts, I shave my head when my hair gets too long, and I Take about five minutes to get ready in the morning (well, aside from showering).
