Title: Two Trains Derail Dhaka-Sylhet, Sylhet-Ctg Routes

from Our Correspondent March 28, 2000

SYLHET, Mar 28: Hundreds of train passengers had to suffer for at least 10 hours following yesterday's (Monday) derailment of two trains here forcing suspension of train communications between Dhaka and Sylhet and Sylhet and Chittagong.

Sources said that a Sylhet-bound mixed train from Chittagong derailed at Katalpur near the Muglabazar railway station at about 7 am on Monday. As a result, all the inter-city connectors including Jayantika and Paharika express trains, which operate on Dhaka-Sylhet and Sylhet-Chittagong routes, had to be halted at the said station for four hours.

Later, a relief train from Sylhet put the derailed mixed train on the track and communication was restored at about 11 am, sources added.

The second mishap of the day occurred at about 4 pm when the engine of Dhaka-bound Parabat express derailed in the Magurchhara area and consequently timings of the inter-city Upaban, Udayan and other local trains had to be rescheduled.

The communication was restored at about 11-30 pm after a relief train cleared the track. The trains which were on way had to wait for hours until communication was restored mounting the sufferings of passengers.

When contacted last night, sources in the Bangladesh Railway could not confirm any casualty due to the train mishaps.
