grunting sounds

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

My 14-pound female Maine Coon makes grunting sounds when she's resting or purring. Sometimes, it sounds like she's snoring. I've taken her to the Vet to be checked out for such things as asthma, but she appears to be finegood lungs, good heart. The Vet asked me to make a tape recording of the sound for him so that he could better diagnose it. Another Vet said that sometimes large cats make throaty sounds. Does anyone else have an MC that grunts or otherwise makes strange sounds when resting?

While we have a Maine Coon cat, another of our cats, a 19.2-pound white one, makes the kinds of noises you describe. He seems perfectly okay (though overweight). He honks and grunts and makes snoring noises and is happy as a clam. He will also echo back sounds you exchange with him when you're holding him - one grunt for one, two for two. Quite amazing. I think it's just his way and don't plan to pursue it as a problem. What else have you learned you might share, please?

I too have spent time trying to trace my beautiful 17lb,9year old (its her Birthday Easter sunday )best friend Tammy Marie's night noises. At first I thought she had a chest infection, but the snoring appears to be naisal and does not seem to bother her at all. I think the advice of a humidifyer might just be the way to go,I live in florida and the A/C is in use most of the year. Quick Word...I am so happy to have found this site, and to be part of the now network of The Maine Coon Owners
