KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- A helicopter carrying some members of the fighting opposition crashed in northern Afghanistan killing all 15 people on board, an opposition spokesman said Tuesday. The crash occurred on Monday near the capital of Takhar province, a stronghold of the northern-based opposition, according to Mohammed Bilal.

The helicopter apparently developed mechanical failure and crashed during the flight from the Panjshir Valley.

There were some opposition military personnel aboard the aircraft but it wasn't clear how many.

The northern-based opposition controls about 10 percent of Afghanistan, all of it in the north. The Taliban religious army rules the remaining 90 percent of the country, including the capital of Kabul.
