INDEPENDENT Energy has hit further billing trouble, only two months after the electricity company admitted to "major" snags that resulted in faulty bills.

It has emerged that what the company describes as "a small percentage of the customer base" have not received any bills. Last week, Independent sent a mailing to the small and medium-sized businesses affected, apologising for the delayed bills.

An Independent Energy spokesman said: "The company has said it is very sorry and is working to ensure customers have their bills in six to eight weeks.

"It has been a little while, but the company has been making great progress. It has taken longer than we thought, there is no doubt about that."

Independent chief executive John Sulley admitted in February to "a major problem" resulting in more than half the company's business customers receiving inaccurate invoices. He blamed the regional electricity companies for sending incorrect data. Independent only produces 5pc of the electricity it markets and is reliant on electricity suppliers' meter readings.

The company's share price slipped 42 1/2 on Friday to close at pounds 28.10, meaning Independent has lost 22pc of its value since shares hit a high of pounds 36.18 last month.
