Dome Horror

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

If any of you visit the Millenium Dome, beware a nasty little corner in the Mind exhibit. There's an endless replay of Sheringham's goal from last year's FAC final. ugh.

The whole place is a horror!!

I took my kids there a couple of weeks ago and we all hated it!! there's actually very little solely for kids and the adult stuff is all pompous twats reminding us of our environmental failures etc...

Actually I've quite enjoyed it. Only downside is that it's absolutely not true that nobody is visiting. The place is absolutely mobbed. And getting in some serious flirting with the guy in the gold jacket in the money exhibit didn't hurt. :-D

Ciara,

I'm suprised!

Did you find it interesting or entertaining?

Anyone else been there and have any thoughts on it?

Just last week with a group of 100 kids Great day out from Ramsgate - but more than let down by what the Dome offered They enjoyed it - but that was more to do with their ability to have fun togeher rather than what what was provided for them. VERY glad I had not paid and the kids had free tickets OFSTED look for awe and wonder - for that amount of money it was certainly unsatisfactory. Compared with states side - it was poor

Went on Jan 2nd when it was sheer bedlam...eventually forced to take refuge from clips of Man Utd by retreating to The Rest Zone - designed to provide "a dream-like atmosphere in which people can quietly drift away". Sounded like a good night down the local on the Brown, so went in...to find it crowded with people on mobiles, others taking flash photos of their mates "relaxing" and no sign anywhere of a bar and darts board. We'd seen more tranquil bus shelters. After well publicised major early probs, hear it's a bit better now, but still lots of corporate nonsense. Saving grace was the absolutely dotty but fantastic Millennium Show, which was completely off the wall but very impressive - and I believe it stars more than one or two Geordies. Anyone else understand what on earth the show was supposed to be about?

I,ve been promising to take the wife and kids there in the next couple of months. Do I or do I not try to change the plans? I need some guidance here. If I do decide to go can anyone offer any ideas as to a cheap and cheerful hotel in the city centre?

Rik...I have to admit that - apart from that Millennium Show - I hated 90 per cent of the Dome. But everyone is different and some people have come away raving about the place. I really think you should go and make your own mind up, especially with kids. They'll probably enjoy the whole experience - ride on flash new tube line/"street" entertainers by the queues for zones/discovery that even the Dome has a McDonalds etc. Best tip to beat queues is to go on a weekday outside of school holidays, but know that's difficult for anyone with kids. The fact the Dome is now open until late at night might spread the load of punters. As for a hotel, someone else's personal recommendation is obviously best - but you could try looking at the selection on offer via the "thisislondon.com" site...which also has the latest West Ham team news re tonight. Follow links to London Guide/Tourist Info/Hotel Bookings. There's quite a wide selection there at all prices from HotelWorld.com. My cheapest option is a one day family travelcard on the Circle Line...but they chuck you off when it closes at 12.30am...

Mostly found it interesting, the interactive elements that I could actually get near were entertaining, as was watching some of the kids' reactions. Though I think some of the stuff, esp Body zone would terrify very young children. I do wish they'd let you play with some of the models of technology to come in the talk zone. The rest area was great when I was in. There were signs up telling people not to use flash and turn off mobiles. Even with the amount of kids in the place, they were pretty well behaved. Relaxing, and also great people watching. Especially seniors getting very giggly as they negotiated the curvy bits. Didn't see the entire millenium show as I was given a late entrance time, was exhausted by that point and wanted to see Blackadder. From the bits I saw on the higher level, it reminded me alot of Cirque du Soleil, which is quite good. Though the inability to darken the place and add lighting effects keeps the 'wow' factor down a bit.
