Title: Cargo Train Goes Off Tracks in Chumphon

April 11, 2000

A Malaysia-bound cargo train derailed in heavy rain in southern Chumphon province on Sunday night. There were no casualties but over 800m of track was damaged.

Railway officials assumed a substandard track and overloaded wagons were to blame. Ten of the 17 wagons of train No 779 derailed on the 482nd km-marker of the southern railway track near Visai-Thoongkha railway station in Muang Chumphon district at 8.40pm on Sunday. The incident disrupted rail traffic between Bangkok and the South as over 1,000 passengers were stranded at Chumphon station yesterday.

The State Railway of Thailand had to transport ticket holders from the station by bus to catch other trains at the nearby Langsuan railway station.

Railway officials braved the rain all night to repair the damaged section of the track, which was reopened to low-speed trains yesterday evening.
