Nothing toplay for but PRIDE

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Well I must say that I'm still gutted. I really didn't want to come on here for about a week, but alas I had to come to Uni today and couldn't withstand the call of the BBS.

On to my FA Cupsemi final story.

Well I spent sunday day ringing up every damn place looking for somewhere to watch the match. All the irish pubs close at midnight and the only sports bar said they weren't going to show it.

So off I trudged to work at 2:00pm in a disconsolute mood. I finished work at 8:30pm and headed to the city to find somewhere, anywhere that might be showing the match.

Luck would have it, that the bus from work stops near to the casino, so having avoided the place for since it opened (5 or so years ago) I hesitantly climbed it's marbled stairs. I quick enquiry to one of the security guards, heads me in the direction of the casino's sports bar and the biggest tv screen I have ever seen. I asked to bar manager if they would be showing the match, and after he checked the program guide, responed that they would and turn the music off so we could here the comontery.

Well it's a good 3hour before the start of the match, so I rang around some friends to see if anyone wanted to come and keep me company. It ended up that having to wakeup in the morning for work was more important than watching a game few understood. However my flate came in, but quickly disappeared to play the pokies.

Realising that I had a 3 hour wait before kickoff, I decided to limit my self to 1 scotch (whiskey) per half hour. I put my NUFC shirt on over my work shirt in the off chance that it would attract some interest. Sure enough, over the next 2 hours a dozen or so backpackers came up to ask if they would be showing the match.

An hour before kickoff, 11pm, my flat mate returned with a couple of hundred dollars won on the pokies. At which stage the consumption of scotch greatly increased.

30 minutes before kickoff a Geordie came and sat down next me and asked, "this is obviously the toon end" at witch point I said yes and turned around to see if anyone else was seated watch the game.

Well behind was sat a dozen or so NUFC supporters wearing various toon tops. On the side of the room at the back were half a dozen Chelsea supporters. And in front of them were a heap of backpackers.

My new Geordie friend is one Bob Halliday, who owns one of the motor bike shops on a street with about 15 motor bike shops near The Strawberry. When he gets back to the toon, he should be popping in here. We had a some very good discussions through out the night.

On to the match.

Well I thought it was the best game I have seen. Not that I've seen many full matches via tv and video. If I said it once, I said it a hundred times last week, Poyet needed to be man marked.

I thought Howey and Dabizas were magnificant. Dunc's injury breought about a lot of moaning. We to thought Speed was largely missing in action.

Contrary to many on here I thought Chelsea dominated mutch of the match and generally looked in controll. I thought a couple of times that we were a bit complacent, both Chelsea goals being due to this. However I admit that there were circumstances surrounding both goals where the players obviously were expecting a whistle or something to stop play, while Chelsea played on.

We clearly created the more chances, and were desperately unlucky that Nobby fired over and Kieron's shot was well tipped over.

I was inconsolable after the final whistle, and couldn't bear going home, so proceded to drink some large quantities of scotch so that when I got home I'd fall in bed in a drunken stupor and passout. Whitch succeded rather well.

Usually when in a depressed state, writing about said problem or event helps relieve some of my dark humors. Not this time.

Tre,

That road with the motor bike shops on would probably be westgate road :)

I agree that writing isn't helping at all, I'm still gutted and probably will be for some time to come....a decent win tomorrow might help to lift the gloom a little but I'm not that hopeful about it happening :((

Tre, Remember the positives and forget the negatives. 1 ... We played them off the park 2 .... Rob Lee is scoring again 3 ...... Our team , are playing like a team again. 4....... the season is far from over 5 .... As gav says, if we w when we win tommoror, we'll be in eight place, just one place below th makems. 6 .... Europe beckons, theres going to be some great games in the next few weeks

Have I forgot any more plus points? And now for the Negatives ..... . . . .. .Can't remember any.

sorry to hear writing things didnt help you Tre! ;-(

its always great to read how other people spent the 'big day'.

It was a great game- the 2nd half had me on a complete high and when Lee scored it was just fantastic! Lets never forget how good that 2nd half felt, up until Poyet scored.

Just one last thing though.....think u had too many scotch if u thought Chelsea dominated +were in control!! MAtch stats and a reasonably clear head while watching would have showed u that..... though Chelsea looked quite dangerous going forward at times in the 1st half and late in 2nd when we pushed forward, we played them off the park....simple as that.

Spud,

Actually what I meant was that when Chelsea had the ball, they new what they were doing with it, making good passes etc. Usually it was only our fine defence intercepting the ball, or a player making a sliding tackle to put the ball out of play.

Conversely, for us it was often a long ball game with the ball being punted up to Shearer and if we managed to control the knock down great. But just as often the ball fell to a Chelsea player. Often we played on the counter attack, which usually saw Shearer out wide trying to centre the ball for some one else. Admittedly we scored from just such a scenerio, but I would have much rathered Shearer managing a half dozen shots as other players supplied him with good passes along the ground.
